You need to format the card before you can use it. Pick "Format" from the camera's menu to initialize the card.

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.
If that doesn't work, try another card.

When camera is turned on it reads "this card cannot be used" i have pictures on it about 60 it is a 4gb pny card. charged camera overnight and took one pic the following morning before message...

Because the same message appears when you insert the card into other cameras the most likely problems are that the card is full or defective.
Have you tried another card in your camera? If not then you should do so. If it works then it confirms your other card is full or defective.

Welcome to Fixya
Err 99 could mean several different things, such as... Memory Card, Lens or Lens contacts....

Here's what you can try:
Remove the memory card an enable "shooting with out memory card" and see if you still get the error. If it works your memory card is bad. Try another lens if you can. Clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser (be careful not to get eraser dust in the camera body or in the lens). Worst case scenario is, Err 99 could be related to the shutter failing which would mean a trip to Canon.

Thank you

I turn the caera on and I get a message stating " Card not initialized" Can this be fixed or do I need to buy a new card.

It just means that the card needs to be formatted (or initialized) in the camera. This will erase it so download any pics from it first....use a card reader if necessary. Then, go into the camera menu and find "format" (may be called "initialize") and follow the on-screen instructions to erase the card and bring it back to "like new" status.
