This is usually becasue of overheating or PSU needing cleaning. PC worlds answer to every computer problem is "needs new motherboard".

Overheating can be sorted by setting the computer to operate in low performance or "quiet mode" and getting a cooling pad for it to stop the heat buildup and psu cleaning is easy but be careful to use a soft hair brush and not a vacuum or compressed air.

Simple test - open the side of the pc, boot into the BIOS and wait, if the pc shuts down then restart it in the BIOS and check the temperatures - if they are ok then the board is faulty and you must replace it, a similar new one will cost you less than $40.

Keeps locking every 5 mins

Sounds like it's hibernating. Go into control panel and check the settings. Personally I always turn off the hibernation facility, it's a PITA.

I think it is a prob with the mother board.........no need t change RAM or hard drive........they dont cause this type of prob. Ur mother board is not accepting the shutdown command.
Try the following command in command prompt:

shutdown /s /f

How do i reset the bios or the password using the mother board

Hi.
1.open your system, find a small coin sized CMOS battery on your motherboard.
2. Remove it and leave your system for around 20 mins and replace the battery back and restart your system.
3. Your BIOS settings will be replaced to default including password.

I hope this is helpful to you
Thanks

Packard bell utow co20 the computer will stay on for as long as I dont use it, but as soon as I start useing it it will shut down in about 5 mins

First things first: "work" in giving this away has dodged the "responsible disposal" bullet. Drivers for this unit are probably limited to windows 98 or earlier, as the last Packard-Bell was produced in that era. Drivers for sound in particular were Packard-Bell only, and since they aren't around any more unless you can get your hands on the original installation CD you're out of luck to make the existing soundcard work. You do howrever have the option to install a newer soundcard, that should fix that issue. As for the shutting down, make sure the heatsink has good thermal contact with the processor as it sounds like the processor may be overheating. If there's a fan make sure it is running.

You've got a challenge if you want to see it all work, have fun.
