I am having issue with my Asus P5B Motherboard with Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8GB CPU, no overclocking. It has 4GB of Kingston Value RAM with default settings and Windows 7 Professional loaded. The power supply is the Antec Earthwatt 500W. Hard drive is WD Black Caviar 1TB. It freezes sometime when I power on the computer at the POST screen. I have to power off and power on a few times until I get one success boot up to Windows. On other times, it won't freeze right away. I wake up the computer from hibernation and it works for a few minutes and it suddenly froze. I it doesn't freeze within the first 5 minutes, it will be good until I shut off or hibernate the machine. (about 10+ hours uptime). I have the same problem from Windows Vista. It was upgraded to Windows 7 now and I still experienced the same issue. I tested with Memtest and the memory has no issue. I swapped with different memory chips, Power Supply, Hard disk and upgraded to the latest bios. I also cleared the CMOS.and it does not make any difference. I am not quite sure what else I could do besides replacing the motherboard. Any suggestions?

Hi There,

Although I specialize in Laptops, I have one Desktop I built for myself and it runs on a P5B.

I'm running with an Intel E6400 2.13 GHz and the difference got me to thinking your processor could actually br the culprit. I'd look there before throwing in the towel on the MOBO.

Keep in mind that running benchmarks on it may not expose the glitch, even though I hate telling people to buy to troubvleshoot.

Still, if you need a new board, why not have the new chip anyway?

Marcus

SOURCE: I am having issue with

Hello,

Some ASUS boards feature a log in the BIOS (near admin setup if memory serves). Try looking for it, and see if there are any entries there.

You mention that you have already tested / swapped the memory out, have you tried removing half the memory (leaving only 2GB in place) and see if freezing problem remains? If it does, then replace the memory that was removed, and remove the other 2GB. It may take some time for testing between sessions.

What type of keyboard are you using? I suspect that it is 1) USB and 2) running through a hub. For testing purposes, consider using a PS2 keyboard if you still have the port for it.

When your computer freezes, what are the NUM Lock, Caps Lock, etc lights doing? Are they blinking by chance? They may not do anything on a USB keyboard, but sometimes, you will get an error code if a PS2 is used. Try it, nothing to lose.

Also when it freezes, what is the status of the hard drive light? Is it dark, or is it lit?

What Cpu fit a p5kpl-c and the best to buy.

This is older type of motherboard, made by Asus and supporting Intel Pentium 4, 775pin processor (LGA775). It will support DDR2 to the value of 4GB, it will support 64bit operating system. it have single PATA port, SATA is present but no RAID configuration.

This motherboard requires PCI video card, there is noAGP port and no build in graphics. System is based on Intel G31 Express chipset.

Theoreticaly this motherboard should accept all Intel Pentium for 775 pin processors, albeit early production may need BIOS flush with latest BIOS.

List of processors accepted:

Intel Pentium 4, Intel Pentium D, Intel Pentium Core 2 Duo, Intel Pentium Core 2 Extreme and Intel Pentium Core 2 Quad.

If you need more information or drivers for this particular board, please visit this site adn select exact model:

Earlier i had ASUS P5G-MX motherboard & 2.0 GHz Core 2 duo Processor.I upgrade my Motherboard to Asus P5KL-AM/PS & then i have a black screen with my 2.0 ghz processor, But i tried 2.8 ghz Core 2...

HI,

The only Thing To Do, is view both Motherboards, user Manuals.
To see The boards CPU Support List.
It could be to do with, certain Motherboards Supporting, certain CPUs.
I.e a 533mhz cpu, would not run on a Motherboard that supports 400mhz. The Systems Bios, May cause Other Problems.
If your getting a Black Screen, is it a possible Graphics/Ram Problem, Rather Than The CPU ??

Make sure all Vista updates have been installed, and check the ASUS website for any bios updates. I believe that motherboard had a known issue with stand bye.

Really disappointed with dual core

You can buy a 3.02 pentium 4 processor and need not change any thing else. On the other hand try changing your hard disk with a one with smaller capacity such as 80 GB make it primary with the windows partition not exceeding 15 GB . Make this drive (80 GB )primary and other one secondary.Increase the virtual memory size of your system and for sure you wont need to buy any thing or be depressed anymore.

Problem restrart pc /NO AUTORESTART

It sounds like you're trying to overclock your CPU, and you have exceeded what the CPU is capable of, under the current conditions. When you start the computer, enter BIOS setup (e.g. press the DEL key), and adjust the CPU settings to default. If you're not sure how to do this, choose the "LOAD OPTIMAL SETTINGS" or "LOAD DEFAULT SETTINGS" option from the main BIOS menu. If you are not getting this error until after Windows has started, then there is software installed that is trying to overclock the CPU for you. Uninstall it. It may be a program provided by Asus, or may be a third-party program. It will probably have "tweak" or "overclock" in the name. Overclocking can achieve an increase in performance, but will void the warranty, and does reduce the lifespan of the parts, and tends to make Windows crash more often. It can cause immediate failure of the parts. It should only be done if you understand and accept the risks, and have decided the reward is worthwhile. For most users, it is not worth it.
