Question about Sony KDS-R60XBR2 Television

1 Answer

My Sony KDS-R60XBR2 picture starts out normal, than after about 10 minutes changes color and gets funny horizontal lines and then everything shuts off and I get a 9 blink error code. I talked with Sony and had a guy come out who replaced the optical block and it didn't help, he then replaced the circut board he said controlled the opitical block, and that didn't help, and he then replaced another circut board he said worked with the previous board, and that didn't help. He then gave up and said it couldn't be fixed. I am thinking it must be a loose connection or something more simple that is wrong since the 3 most expensive parts (according to the repair man) were not the culpret. Any ideas? Thanks!

I downloaded a copy of the repair manual so I would know what the diagnostic screen looks like. I entered the Display, Channel 5, volume minus, Power, and got a different looking screen that is blue and has 3 columns and is titled Self Check. (I took a picture of it and could email it to you) The first column has 002-009 which must be the blink number, and then 101, 102, 103, and 104. The middle column has Temp, L Cover, Fan, LDriver, and for 009 row has "device". The Right column has 000 for everything but device, which has 012. The TV shuts itself off after about 30 seconds. I restarted the TV and the next time it had 014 for device. I restarted a third time and it had 018 for device. The TV picture will only stay on for about 30 seconds and then the TV shuts off and has 9 blink code.
Something new...I unplugged the machine and now when I plug it back in it turns it self on and has a green screen and shuts itself back off after about 10 seconds and has 9 blink code.

I found the list of what has been replaced without fixing problem:
    Optical Block
    AV board ($445)
QM board, S1 PWB, S2 PWB, 20 pin Cable ($623)

  • kromingaj Sep 19, 2010

Thank you. My manual does not say how to test these boards. I looked at partsstore.com and they have a Lamp Ballast Driver board for $149 and a Power Supply Block Ballast Unit for $440. Is there anywhere to find out how to test these boards before I start throwing boards at it like the guy who came out to "fix" it who didn't know what he was doing? I do a lot of car repair work and never like to replace a part unless I can prove to myself that it is broken.
I wouldn't mind buying the lamp ballast for $149 if you were pretty sure that was the problem, but the power supply block ballast is too much for that.
    Thanks again
    Jim

I am trying to find out where the lamp ballast board is in my TV and I can't find it in the manual. Does it go by another name like H1, T1, or AU? Is it the board next to the DC blower motor for the lamp?
Thanks again for all of your help.

A 9 blink code usually signals overheating. But for a better diagnostic you should see the diagnostic screen - press the following buttons: Display, Channel, 5, volume Minus, then Power. This brings up a screen with a list of the problems and number of times they have occurred. Each of the problems named, are abbreviated as, "OCP", "OVP", "V STOP", etc.

Yes, this is the correct screen: the left column of the blinks, followed by the error code, the middle column what that represents (Device means a power board) and the last column how many times this error has been encountered lately.
All of those point to a ballast board failure. Check it. You should also check the bulb and its installation, it appears that it's also faulty - the fan problem and the temperature appears to have been cleared when the 2 boards of the power source were replaced.
I still don't understand why did he changed the optical unit - it has absolutely nothing to do with your problem.

The only way you can be sure of what is wrong is to test them - check the voltages at the power source and at the ballast board. In the end it might be something as simple as a bad soldering - you can't know without looking. BTW Power Supply Block Ballast Unit = S2 PWB so it has been already replaced.

To be honest i never took too much attention on how it's named. Yes, it's located in that region and it looks just like in the picture from the partstore site.

Will you help troubleshoot a color problem with my Sony KDS-R60XBR2?

You have a failing optic block. They are roughly $400-800 depending if you can find one. There is no cheap or easy repair for this. Its actually a piece of the optic assembly that is wearing out from age.Very common issue. Google Sony Green Blob.
Personally? Get rid of the TV. Its not worth it.

I have lot of blues and greens sem to have lost the great picture. I have a kp- 65xbr10 w

Sounds like a convergence amp problem.
If you are getting a double image like one of the three
colors Red, Green or Blue is not properly lined up with the other
two colors, Most likely one of the chips is going out.
They become sensitive to vibration before they go out completely.
There are also some resistors and pico fuses that go out as well.
You can purchase the amp chips by themselves or in a kit with
fuses and resistors. Good luck..!

Power error 6 times - 11V is low. - No picture/No sound

From my past experience, yes. Not sure about the 11v being low. My kdf 45 acted that way when the main lamp went out. Found a replacement on Amazon for around $45 and now good to go! So far about a year and a half. Have had to replace about 4 for friends and family so far with same symptoms. All worked great! http://www.amazon.com/F93087600-Projection-Replacement-KDS-R50XBR1-KDS-R60XBR1/dp/B005I4OLAS/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1386773721&sr=8-13&keywords=Sony+Sony+Kds-r60xbr2+bulb&tag=donations09-20

Sony wega KSD-R60XBR1 green screen that can not be adjusted no matter what input is used or adjustment through onscreen tv options. how do i knw if it is the color wheel, light engine, or just a bulb

Hi,
It is light engine problem in your Sony KDS-R60XBR2 lcd rear projection tv.
This tv does not have any color wheel because of its light engine technology.
Lamp is just light source that provides bright white light to light engine and its working properly.
Light engine will be replaced to fix green screen problem.

If you tv model is other than above mentioned, let me know to revise this answer.
Hope these info will help you.
Thanks.

Picture color is off after circuit breaker tripped. Only blues and greens. Model SONY KDS - R60XBR2. Does the lamp do this when it needs replacing or could something else have blown when the breaker...

Sony TVs has an Optical Block issue. If there is an issue with the optical block, then there will be green, blue patches or tint on the TV display. Try resetting the TV to the factory settings and try Power resetting the TV. Turn Off the TV and remove the power plug from the wall outlet for 1 minute and reconnect it and check the operation. If the issue still persists, then TV may require service. You can contact the Customer relations team and check for the available options. Sony had repaired free of cost for such issues. Hence, contact the customer relations.

KDS-R60XBR2 projection 60'' Sony tv the picture is turning yellow why is this happening

It sems that you are having a problem with you color wheel, that is what makes the variation of color happen in your tv set, if that is not working correctly, it causes either a black and white picture, some times no picture at all or like in your case to much of one color.

TV will not turn on. Red light flashes 4 times

Try connecting the TV directly to a different wall outlet and check. If the issue persists, try power resetting the TV. Turn Off the TV and remove the power plug from the wall outlet for 1 minute and reconnect it and check the operation. If the issue persists, then the TV requires service.
