I'm trying to reinstall windows on my desktop dell computer I've changed the boot order to boot from the cd/dvd dsrive but it will not boot from the drive. so I boot up the cpu normal when i click on the drive where the windows is located the drive shows a different content of the disc instead of the windows files that I know is on the disc. I put it in another cpu and it showes exactly whats on the disc what could be the problem.

Hi. Is the Harddrive that you are trying to access is your slave drive. I am jsut wondering how come you were abe to see the content of the drive when in fact there is no windows files inside. Are you referring with the CD or with the harddrive. Pardon me for asking.

Hi! YOu may have inserted a different disc. Please insert the correct bootable windows. When you used a different pc to check the disc, does it contain windows files?

Hi! Try the bios setting again then put it on BOOT from cd/dvd. Don't forget to save and exit. Sometimes we overlook this things. One thing that can cause this is when the cd is full of scratches or the optical drive is faulty that's why it jumps on booting normally. If that will be the case then try swapping the cd/dvd drive. I just hope that the first option works.

How to change boot order

Hold the ''c'' key down while starting the computer. The computer will boot from the CD.

As far as not being able to enter BIOS, it could be locked with a password.

The harddrive on my dell inspiron 1464 was formatted. Now the computer will not boot. (the message display's bot manager missing)\ How do I fix this. any help would be great, thank you

hello, try these steps to fix the problem.
  • Insert your Windows 7 DVD into your optical drive(DVD drive) and restart the system.
  • Boot using this DVD by pressing any key when windows asks "Press any key to continue..".
  • Select your language in the first screen and click "Next".
  • In this Window, select the option named "Repair your computer".
  • This tool will search for the installation directory for a minute.Once it finished, click "Next" once again.
  • Under Recovery Tool, choose the option named "Startup repair". Now,Windows will try to repair your startup problem and gives a message to restart your system.
  • Restart your system to finish the process.
Hope this helps!

I'm trying to reinstall Windowsxp on my Dell dimension 8200. After putting the CD in and it comes up on the screen I click on install Windows XP and then a window pops up that says set up can not continue...

if your using the restore or re-installation CD that came with your DELL computer just boot off the CD.
it will reformat the computer and your data will be lost if you do a fresh install off the CD.
Do not boot into windows and use the CD from there.
make sure you set the bios to boot off the CD follow the instructions on screen to reinstall windows.

I am trying to change booting sequeance from BIOS for reinstal windows to CD Rom. but system in not getting start from ROM.

In order to change the boot sequence on a Dell computer you have to press the F12 key right after the computer starts and BEFORE the Windows logo appears.
You can also choose F2, if you have to get into the BIOS.

On some machines you just have to hold down the respective key, on others you have to tap it repeatedly. Just try it out.
When you see the Windows logo, let the computer complete the start-up, reboot and try again.

Once it is booting from CD/DVD, follow the instructions on the screen ("Press any key to boot from CD...")

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX1 desktop. I have been unable to start Windows and receive the error message: Windows root system32/ntoskrnl.450L exe failure. How do I correct this problem?

You will have to boot in to repair console from XP cd and run it so it can try to repair the Operating system. Put in cd and restart and if it does not ask to boot to cd u have to change boot order in bios to boot to CD rom first. If all this fails you have to reinstall windows. Hope this helps.

Dell Inspiron 530s/531s desktop, Win. Xp home...Windows stops responding at the ''Loading Personal Settings'' cannot boot in safe mode.

try to boot in "Last good known configuration settings" by restarting your pc and then press F8 before windows appear and then select the boot option i mention above. if this not work since you said that it can't boot to safe mode, your other option is to repair the windows or else reformat it. when you repair the windows you must have windows xp home edition cd installer, you load it to your cd/dvd rom and then restart your pc and press F2 or DEL button before windows appear in order to go to setup bios settings. in bios settings, you choose boot order setup and setup first priority to cd/dvd and press F10 by saving the changes and then press any key when you see the prompt so that it can boot up to windows xp home cd installer and then follow screen instruction that you arrive to windows repair option.

I can't format HD with XP SP3

Hi,
You have to go into bios and make the 1st boot order device your cd /dvd rom. (disable hd, other dvd's if you have them and floppy if you have one). Also you should disable boot from other devices if it's there. This will allow you to directly boot from the cd and reformat. Remember to enable HD and make this your first boot order after windows starts the first time. hank

My dell optiplex does not boot and when i try to reinstall it wont boot from cd

I wonder what error message you're getting.
Click here to enter your service tag and to find out if your PC is under warranty. If it is then call Dell and your're good to go.
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/details?c=us&l=en&s=gen
Run the on-board diagnostics: (essentially F12)
http://www.mss.net/Links/DellDocs/OptiGX260/UserGuide/advtshoo.htm
If it's not making it to the Windows splash screen then this should lead you in the right direction. If you have decided to reinstall and are booting with the OS CD-Rom, but it's not booting you will need to adjust the boot order to include the CD-Rom in the BIOS.
