Can I download Simpletech pininfarina 320gb drivers on Macbook Air

On a Mac you generally have all the drivers you need built in. Would be very rare these days to download a special driver. Any drive plugged in to the USB port usually shows up.
Perhaps the drive needs formatting first. Often external drives are pre formatted for PC.
First...Open Drive Utility in Applications / Utilities Folder
Then Plug External Drive in.
It should show up in Left Column of DU Window
Use Drive Utility to format & test the drive.
Use the Mac OS Extended (Journled) if using with Mac files or FAT 32 if swapping data from PC to Mac & back.
Good Luck

Defragment/clean-up external HD

Hello Anonymous
Make sure you have backed up all the files you need to keep.
Store them on the computer if you have the space... until you put them back on the clean Hard Drive.
Your drive would be seven years old now. So... it would be a wise move to do a security type format to test the drives integrity before you loose your backups. Many Drives don't last seven years...
320GB is also pretty small these days. Suggest you use the old drive for eg. "Movies" and buy a new Hard Drive for your Backups as this drive may fail at any time.
Murphy's Law says that will be when you need it the most!
A 3.5 inch Drive (uses 5v&12v) and is more robust & faster than your 2.5" pocket type drives that run on 5 volts only. Also, look for a USB 3 or FireWire Port connector as these will ensure compatibility & speed on future computers. USB 1&2 are slow on large files.

DeFragging only shuffles the empty space around. Lining it up sequentially so that it's faster at accessing the data.
Re Formatting wipes the directory off the drive making it appear that you have a new clean drive. Previous files then get overwritten.

Do a security erase if you want to clean all data from the drive & test the drive for faults. This will return all available space available to you as an empty drive.
On a Mac, use Disk Utility. Choose Fat32 to allow interchangeability with Mac <> PC or "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" for Mac Bootable Disks.
On a PC use Disk Management for a quick format to Fat32 or NTFS for Windows Boot. Or See Here for full details:

Drives are so inexpensive these days. You can pick up a 1Terrabyte drive for $99 here. Format & test the drive before putting it to use on your computer. This will be one of the few times you will get to test & experiment with the drive before you put your data on it.
You can always use a USB Memory Stick as a pretend Hard Drive to experiment with & test the formatting procedure. They use the same Partition & Format utilities as a regular Hard Drive.

Hi, i have a Seagate Expansion 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive and i want to backup my macintosh by using disk utility. However it seems like as i plug the hard drive in, i cannot put anything...

The MAC is not recognizing HDD because it may not be in FAT or MAC OS X Journeled Format.
Please Follow below steps to Reformat the HDD to make it Compatible with MAC.

1. Connect the HDD.
2. Open Disk Utility from Applications -> Utilities
3. On left side of Disk Utility you'll find your HDD.
4. Click on HDD and select the Format TAB.
5. Reformat the HDD in Mac OSX Journeled Format.
6. Click Apply.
7. Done.

P.S. : It will erase everything from your HDD so remember to backup all data before doing this.

Hope it Helps..!!

My portable drive is not recognised many times

The format of your drive is probably not correct. If data is not stored on your hard-drive, format it to NTFS if on Windows, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if on a Mac. If there is data, back it up to a computer that can read it and then format the drive.

I have a mac. how do i get the 320 to work? i already have stuff backed up on it from my old computer which was windows.

Your Mac can't recognize the 320 because it's formatted as NTFS and Mac uses Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. You need to install one or two apps on the Mac; Crossover or Parallels, and then install the Windows software on the Mac you need to read and use the files.

At that point, some files which share file types in Windows and Mac could be transfered (jpeg, mp3-4, etc.)

You'll learn maybe more than you wanted to,

Good Luck,

I have a Lacie 320gb external harddrive which was connected to an eMac and is now connected to an Acer laptop. I've reformatted it as NTFS and it shows up in disk management as healthy but does not appear...

you need to give it a drive letter

A more reliable way to do this is via the computer management console

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer management / Disk Management.

Your drive should show up in here.

if it says Healthy and just above that gives the file system eg. NTFS or FAT32 etc it should be fine but may just need a drive letter.

If it does dot say any of those then right click on it and use the format option. Select how you want to format it (NTFS for XP is preffered)
and then tell it to do a FULL format. and also give it a drive letter !
It may take a while but I find it more reliable overall.

If it didn't have a drive letter then right click and use the Change Drive Letter and Paths option, then add a drive letter and use the one it offers.

I like to re-boot just to be sure windows sees it properly
