Cooling fans do not start?

Does this include the Power Supply fan also?
Does the LED Power On light light up? How about the Harddrive activity LED light?

So far from your brief diagnosis given, it would seem you have a bad Power Supply. Weak voltage power rail.

1) ALL the LED lights use less than 1 Watt of power.

2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts of power.

3) A typical Processor can use 51 to 125 Watts of power. Depends on what Processor it is.

[The Dell Dimension 4600 desktop computers, were offered with a few different models of Intel Pentium 4 processors.

Intel Pentium 4 at 2.26GHz, up to an Intel Pentium 4 at 3.06GHz.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4600/en/4600i/sm/index.htm

(Left-click on Technical Specifications in the list)

These Intel Pentium 4's can use anywhere from 56 Watts, up to 81.8 Watts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Pentium_4_microprocessors#Northwood_.28130.C2.A0nm.29

(56 Watts for an Intel Pentium 4 with a Northwood Core at 2.26GHz, and 81.8 Watts for an Intel Pentium 4 with a Northwood Core, at 3.06GHz. Look under TDP)

A bad Power Supply with a weak voltage rail, may have enough power to light LED lights, and maybe even spin fans, but will not have enough power to turn the Processor on.

Suggest you look into the Power Supply.

My Asus x44l laptop won't start up. When I hit the power button a couple of the lights come on for a split second and then die. When I have it plugged in it says the battery is charging.

Since it seems to try to start up, what could very well be happening is that the cooling ducts or CPU heat sink could be clogged with dust and dirt, or the cooling fan itself it non-operational. Computer CPUs, if not given proper cooling, can overheat in a matter of a few seconds. Therefore, most will auto-shutdown to protect themselves. Check the inlet and outlet vents and the CPU heat sink for clogs. Also verify that the cooling fans run when the unit is energized.

Laptop is turning off by itself.

Hi.

If your computer turns off after idling for a while, then check power saving settings, accessible from control panel.

If laptop turns off while you are using it, try first reinstalling the system to exclude system problems, or test the laptop starting OS from CD or staying in Bios settings mode, so to exclude installed system.

If laptop is still shutting down, then problem may be overheating.

Overheating usually happens when the fan is not coming , therefore when the computer overheats.Or the fan is not cooling enough and computer is overheating.

Monitor computer temperature using a software, check if Fan is coming up when temperature gets critical.

If fan comes up but does not cool enough, then replace the fan, it is not efficient anymore because of a bad bearing or dust. ~Also ensure that fan is well mounted, if fan has poor contact with CPU surface , cooling will be poor.

If fan does not come up, and critical temp is not detected, then the sensor on motherboard is bad, this is very uncommon. When this happens the problem is usually related to system or power settiings , rather than overheating.

If fan does not come up and temp is critical, then fan is faulty, replace it.

There are also more than one fan on many laptops, check that one of the fans (CPU fan, video fan) is not completely ded, and therefore cause for the problem.

By using the software below you can also find out if the problem is really overheating. If temperature results within normal range, then usually it is not overheating. In that case test systtem and check power saving settings.

Here is the software to control your fan and temp. sensor state:

My laptop is overheating.

That would be normal, as the variable speed fan comes on only when the computer is under load.

What is not normal is that the fan is not coming on when the computer overheats.Or that the fan is not cooling enough when computer is overheating.

Very peculiar. I would suggest having the coolant system drained, flushed and filled accordingly. Have the thermostat replaced. Seems the thermostat is stuck in the closed position, not allowing coolant to cycle thru the motor. Have the water pumped checked for leaks, or faults.
