If its not the C/: and isn't an external drive then as a secondary drive it has become coprrupt with its signing to windows because of it booting up with windows , right click on it and reformat it or use something like Maxblast or Acronis to boot it up and if that works then you can remove any content to reformat it just check to see if content needs to be removed before reformatting.

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

SOURCE: broken external hard drive

if the broken piece is internal and rattling around, it is most likely terminal and you need to replace the hard drive, if it is an external part or a connector you may try a computer shop to see if it can be repaired, but more than likely that will cost more than replacing the drive, but they may be able to recover any data that is on it

Good Luck

Have you paid the one time activation fee to enable external hard drives to be connected to your DVR? Per the link below that is required first.

You need to include info about your computer, and which format your external hard drive is: USB or Firewire. Are you using a Mac or PC?
"Boot" refers to the situation in which your hard drives sets up the operating system of your computer. I doubt this is the case. Do you mean that your host computer does not recognize the external drive?
If the latter is true, this can have many causes.
Also, did this drive work at some time? If so, with this computer, or a different one? The problem may be as simple as installing the proper driver, or at worst, the drive may be non-functional.
Most manufacturers of mass produced external drives, in the interests of being competitive, use drives that are not as durable as you would expect in a backup drive. Also, the interface in the case that houses the external drive often fails, so the drive itself may be OK. You can check this, but observe the following conditions:
1. You will void the warranty if you open the external drive case.
2, The warranty will replace the drive, but will not recover the data on that drive.
3. You can remove the external drive from the case and install it in your host computer to check it, if your computer is compatible with that drive. You need to know how to set the jumpers of that drive for your setup.
4. This can be a difficult and frustrating process. If the data on the drive is important enough, you have to decide if the cost to retrieve it is worth it to you.

SOURCE: I have a Maxtor onetouch

That's because the software it comes with unlocks the drive to do backups. You should be able to format the drive in windows and then it should work fine for your purposes.
Right Click the Drive, Select Format, give it a volume name if you want and select quick format. Leave everything else default.

Beeping is a certain sign of hard disk failure.
You have no other option but to replace the drive.

Consider price rather than capacity, a larger drive may well be currently cheaper.

I can not see my usb maxtor 3200 hard drive in my

this could idicate a low power supply for the device. some computer do have front usb ports, the truth about this front port is that they lack the power to supply some of this devices (being 200GB). If you are connecting it to the front usb then try using the main one behind the pc.
also note that usb polling which acts by reducing power consumed by the device may also be a cause(that is if you are using a modified version of windows other than that from microsoft since the modifier can alter that as well). Also try using it on a friends pc to see the outcome.
do let me know of the out come.
good luck

Plugged in my Maxtor 3200. The computer recognizes it, but will not allow me to store any info on it... says it "cannot be modified." ??????

Check this on another computer to see if the same thing happens. if it does, look into the user manual to see if there are any physical settings you need to change on the drive itself.

Maxtor 320 GB mini not working

If it shows up as a USB mass storage device it:-
1. Has power
2. It is connected to the computer via USB.
3.The correct software has been loaded for the hard drive.
The beep sound is probably an error message saying that the drive is not responding properly inside the case.

Hard drives Drives have been known to stick or not start up due to power cables or ribbon cables being dislodged. Try pushing these back into place.

If this is not the problem go to the Maxtor site (maxtor.com) and report the problem with the drive, not the USB which appears to functioning correctly.

Maxtor IDE Hard Drive

You hard drive has drivers and was set to a different computer, thus enviroment. To make that hard drive work on your new computer - the Operating System will have to have a repair done to it - if you do a repair - you will not lose any docs or email, but, you will have to re-install programs to see the re-done Operating System, then you will have to load all the drivers that operate your new dell computer - if the new dell was not designed for XP and only vista - it will never read that Hard Drive till you install Vista on it.
