Temperature rising in fridge and freezer

The temperature won't stay at the set degree in either the fridge or the freezer and the unit is only 9 months old!
The tech said the compressor was cool, meaning it has not bee running.  He "thinks" it has to do with a bad relay - does this sound accurate?

    Hi,

I have a similar problem. My refrigerator's model number is RB2155SH. I bought it used about a month ago and it has been "acting up". Last night I noticed that my beer was warmer than it should have been. The display on the front of the unit said -2 for the freezer and 36 for the refrigerator. But it was definitely not close to either of those numbers. I pulled it out and unplugged for a second and when I plugged it back in the compressor came on and the temperature started to come back down. Then this morning the same thing happened again. When it got warm last night I opened the door and held the door switch closed for thirty seconds and the evaporator fan never came on and the compressor was not working. The light bulb went out when I closed the door switch so I believe the door switch if working. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Yes this could be the problem. I would need more information to believe differently.

It is a compressor cut out. Had a service tech spend two weeks TSing this, while I kept asking if there was a compressor safety cut out switch, and yes there is, and yes, the cut out was the problem.

Model #FGHC2331PF frigidaire. Controls were set for 35F fridge and 0F freezer, but when the fridge stopped the temps went up. They are now at 40F fridge and 5F freezer. Why?

Because nothing is perfect. As soon as the compressor stops running, the refrigerator will start to get warmer as the ambient temperatures will affect it. Then after a few degrees of temp rise, if thermostat is working properly, unit will kick on again to lower temps to preset level. And the cycle continues.

Fridge not cold enough

The higher the number the colder the temp is supposed to be.

In order to prevent the formation of bacteria and other such organisms to affect food the way it does, the ideal temperature range of refrigerators has been mentioned here. Before we look at these settings, it is important to know the format in which temperatures are represented within a refrigerator. Commonly, you will notice a dial representing the figures 1-5 or 1-9 in the refrigerator, and a dial representing the letters A-E in the freezer. The ideal setting is usually in the middle of such figures.

If the dial is in such a format in your refrigerator, try a setting at 3 if the range is 1-5, and at 4 if the range is 1-9. For the freezer, a setting at C is suitable.

The ideal temperature in the refrigerator ranges between 34 degrees F - 38 degrees F or 1 degrees C - 3 degrees C. So that foods such as vegetables and fruits remain fresh and crisp, the temperature may be set around 38 degrees F or 3 degrees C.
The ideal temperature in the freezer ranges around 0 degrees F (-18 degrees C) or lower.

Freezer turns of in cold weather

Many residential refrigerator / freezers are designed to work at temperature considerably above above freezing. Most modern refrigerator / freezer have a single electric thermostat - located in the fresh food compartment. This lone thermostat will control the compressor to keep the fridge (fresh food) section at the desired temperature (usually between 34 - 38 degrees F). The freezer will get colder regardless of how cold it is already whenever the fridge thermostat turns the compressor on.

Now that you see how the thermostat works, let's look at what happens when the fridge is placed in an unheated space - like a garage. In winter time, the temperature can drop considerably below 38 degrees. If the outdoor temperature remains cold enough, for long enough - it will affect the thermostat in the fridge. The temperature inside the fridge could drop below 38 degrees, preventing the thermostat from telling the compressor to turn on. Meanwhile, the temperature in the freezer compartment slowly rises from the normal -10 to 0 F degrees. It will continue to rise until it is the same temperature as the fresh food compartment or until the thermostat in the fresh food compartment tells the compressor to turn on again. This means the freezer contents will thaw.

If the temperature in the garage is even in the 40 to 50 degree range, the loss of cold in the fridge may not happen often enough to keep the compressor coming on often enough to keep some freezer items frozen solid - such as ice cream. Remember, water freezes at 32 degrees F, other products may require lower temperatures to remain frozen, and could thaw at 28 or other temperature.

Good luck!

A refrigerator should maintain temperatures at or below 40 degrees F. The freezer temperature should be 0 degrees F or lower

Re: Tempurature Problems

The thermostat is likely failing intermittently, or the defrost timer could be failing.

Both parts can be tested (and should have been) by the repairman.

The defrost timer turns on and off to let the coils defrost - but if it stays off - can cause the rise in temperature. The thermostat, however, reports the temperature to the timer, so either (or both) could be to blame.

Have them tested.

check the defrost thermostat , and any temp sensor that can determine the freezer temperature.
If this fridge temperature is electronically controlled, the freezer control board must also be tested.

Freezer not cold enough; fridge OK

Hello cokoliso,
Welcome to Fixya

You said, your Trio won't make ice. Freezer stays at about 25 degrees regardless of control setting. Fridge maintains 40 degrees at mid setting. Shouldn't the freezer be close to zero? Is there a way to check the temperature sensor in the freezer?

To check the temperature you can buy a refrigerator thermometer at the hardware store.
Ask if it can be used in the freezer too!

The fridge sounds slightly to cold and the freezer not enough.
Fist look in your freezer and check if the articles there are full to the max and covering the air vents usually found in the rear of the freezer. If so clear an opening for the freezer to breath.
Refrigerators and freezers usually share the cold air and I've seen this be the problem on many occasions.
If freezer was not I blocking the vents or even full to the max.

Then pull the plug out or if you can not reach the plug, trip the breaker off for 5 minutes and see if this resets the system.BUT do not plug the fridge back in before at least 3 minutes.

Let me know how it goes and send me any questions.
Thank You, Huuum
