Question about Rancilio Rocky Doser Espresso Grinder (Stainless Steel)

1 Answer

We have had our grinder 3 years. About 6 months ago it started leaking lots of ground coffee on the counter but still worked fine. Two weeks ago it just completely stopped working. It does not make a sound. Cannot find anyone locally to look at it??

Hello Darla, if the grinder will not run or make a sound, it usually means that the motor isn't getting power. Make sure it plugged in of course but your main switch may have gone bad and needs to be replaced. As far as leaking grinds; you must have a bad seal between the doser and the mill housing. Feel free to give me an email if you need more info or parts.

We have a sunbeam cafe series coffee machine that is 2 years old but suddenly under extracts on the pour and cannot reach the extraction pressure we are used to. We grind our own beans as well.

Generally, this is not a problem with the machine but with how you're loading the coffee! Sounds typical of one of these problems:-

Not enough coffee in the basket
Coffee should be filled and tamped to about 3mm below the rim.
Coffee grind not fine enough (too coarse)
Do you grind your own coffee or buy ready-ground? If buying ready-ground, make sure it is for espresso (fine) and not for filter or plunger.
If you have your own grinder, (like the Sunbeam Conical Grinder), then make sure the coffee hopper on top is securely connected to the grinder. I'd been using mine for years on the the finest grind (1) not realising the hopper wan't on right. Only discovered it when I took it apart to clean. Now my grinder is on 9-10 to grind for espresso.
Coffee not tampered down hard enough
You do need to provide a reasonable degree of pressure to tamp the coffee down just right.
Group head not turned tight enough
Push the group handle as far to the right as it will go, then ease it back just a fraction to have the right pressure.

Have you tried to hoover up the grinds from time to time, from the grinder blades. The coffee beans and ground can gather under the blades from over time. It should not be a problem though.
For better crema you may want to replace the blades. You should replace every 3-6 years. Rancilio Rocky Grinder Flat blades

My cuisinart burr coffee grinder will not turn on

This model sometime gets plugged up with grounds.

Unplug the grinder, and remove the bin where the grounds go. Look inside the grinder part where the grounds come from the grinder into the bin. This should be clear, and you should be able to see part of the grinder wheel inside. If this is plugged up with grounds, then you'll want to clean it out, but it's possible that the motor has already burned out (we killed two of them last year at my office this way)

Pour out any whole beans that are in the top part. You can pour them in a bowl to save them, you don't have to throw them away.

Unscrew the top part until it detaches from the grinder. This will take 20 or more rotations -- just keep turning it counter-clockwise.

You'll want to do this next part over a sink or a counter that's easy to clean -- you're going to dump a lot of ground coffee.

Looking into the grinder from the top, you'll see the grinding wheel in the center, and packed coffee grounds around the edges. Use a plastic knife or bamboo skewer to clean out the ground coffee. Don't use a screwdriver, metal silverware, or anything metal, as this can damage the grinder housing. You also want to clean from the bin opening. When you're done cleaning, the grinder wheel should turn freely.

Reattach the top portion, put the bin back in place, and turn the grinder on. It should turn on and spin the grinder wheel. If it still doesn't, then your motor is burned out. :(

If it does turn, then put the coffee beans back in and enjoy a cup -o- joe!

Coffee in Cuisinart grind and brew ends up all over counter

once and a while the filter door will come ajar and make the coffee leak all over. (allways try to jigle it open after closing, because fine grounds will make the door not close right) Also if the carafe is not in all the way you'll geta mess too!

Actually, I've never had any problems with my grinder. Got it for a very low price at Costco about 2 years ago. The switch has never failed to function and I've often slid the switch over to the left to stop the grinding before the designated time (I was in a hurry for my coffee) , but this hasn't seemed to negatively effect the function of the switch. It just keeps working.

Grinder blades dull

I may be having the same problem. My coffee grinder has had more leftover beans in it more and more this week, until finally today, possibly a quarter teaspoon passed through to the filter basket and the remaining beans were still very much beans. My first assumption was the blades.
