Bad advice. The recommended replacement does not function in my system. it is a SATA device and not compatible. If this expert had read my message which included my model number he would have known this. What a waste of money and my own stupidity in trusting this so-called expert.

No full refund from Amazon - must pay return shipping of $6.17. No big deal but still feel like a fool for not checking for myself and going directly to the link you provided. I guess paying for an expert doesn't excuse not using your own intelligence.

Installed a new LG burner and have the exact same results - Does not recognize blank discs but will play previously burned discs. Did I receive a defective unit or is it possible there is another problem?

Yes, this is a fairly common laser problem with DVD / CD writers when they start to go out, and is almost always the first symptom they start to display. Sometimes they will even read "retail" discs still, but not blank, or burned discs. You are going to want to replace the drive, luckily they are very inexpensive now-adays. For example this LG burner is only $19... and will definitely function in your system:

You are not stuck with the drive, it was a simple mistake of missing the IDE portion vs SATA, you can return it for a full refund and get an IDE drive in it's place. I am so sorry, I did use the model number you posted, but missed the IDE part. Dang I feel so horrible, but you are certainly not stuck with the drive, Amazon will gladly take the return. You need this one or equivalent, as you now know:

Actually if you want one that does DVD-RW's you will need to spring for the one that's $5 or so more... such as this one:

That is very strange, are you trying to use some burning software like Nero to burn the disc with? What is the error message you get when trying to burn? Try Nero if you don't have it, it's free for 15 days and see if you can burn a disc:

When trying to record a home video VHS to DVD this is what I get. E-4 54040990 Cannot record on this disc. The disc is brand new.

Have you've tried cleaning the laser with a cleaning disc?

Failing this it may be worth removing the cover and cleaning the lens directly with a QTip and some lens cleaning fluid. Only use a drop and then wipe off with a clean dry QTip.

The other option is that you are using an incompatible format of blank DVDs. I've heard of people having problems using DVD-R & DVD-RW and although it is lised as being suitable for all types of recordable DVDs I belive you're best using DVD+R & DVD+RW.

The Manual states

Recordable disc

• We strongly recommend for good recording quality:

SONY DVD+RW 4x, MAXELL DVD+R 4x/8x/16x, SONY DVD+R 4x/8x/16x, TDK DVD+R 4x/8x/16x,

MAXELL DVD-RW 4x, MAXELL DVD-R 8x/16x

• Discs that have been tested and are proven to be compatible with this recorder:

VERBATIM DVD+RW 4x VERBATIM DVD+R 8x
VERBATIM DVD-RW x VERBATIM DVD-R 8x JVC DVD-RW 4x MAXELL DVD-R 16x

Goes to copy files onto DVD with windows media player, but comes up with a long error code right at the end. Have changed speed down to x4 even though dvd's support 16x

Have you tried any other software for burning files??
I use a couple of free programs.
IMGBURN very good, can burn data and image files, but cant make an audio disc from mp3 files
CDBurnerXP this can do everything
If you are still having problems after using these programs, try write the error code down and we can take it from there

Won't work with the same kind of discs i've used before

I not sure as to which type of Discs that you are refering to (ie DVD+R or DVD+RW). This player will only recognize 4x (max) DVD+RW and 8x (max) DVR+R discs. If the DVD+R Disc is 16x, the DVD recorder will not recognize it once you start to record. The player will read the blank Disc and give the impression that it will record on it. I have noticed that when a 16x speed Disc is in the Drive, The recordable hours for the disc seems to double. The normal 6 Hour recording length comes up as 12 Hours when you hit the info button. Since the 8x Speed (max) discs are not available any longer, I found it best to use the DVD+RW 4x Discs and make it compatible. I then copy the compatible DVD+RW disc to a 16X DVD+R disc using my computer DVD burner. The DVD+RW disc can then be erased so that it can be reused.

I have an error 25 on my dvd recorder

Technically, E25 is a copy-protection error, but I have some additional background on this issue. On the one hand, it could be a legitimate copy-protection error - you are trying to record from a copy-once or copy-protected source - this is especially true if you are trying to record from a Cable/Satellite Box that has a DVR box - since copying to the DVR is considered the first "copy," the Magnavox will not allow you to make a "second" copy.

On the other hand, Magnavox/Funai players see all programs recorded in V mode (as opposed to VR mode) as "copy-prohibited". It records all +R discs in VR mode automatically, so the solution in this case would be to record on a compatible -R disc (or vice versa).

There are two simple fixes for this issue in either case:
1) If you are using a +R disc, switch to a -R disc. If you are using a -R disc, switch to a +R disc. Simply switching the disc type will "fix" Magnavox recorders (long story).
2) If your TV has a "Video Out" or "Monitor Out" (most TV's don't), you can connect a yellow video cable from the OUT of the TV to the Video IN on the back of the Magnavox. This will permanently resolve your problem by fooling the recorder.

Here is additional info about the type of disc to get:
IDiscs that have been tested and are proven to be compatible with this recorder:
VERBATIM DVD+R 8x, VERBATIM DVD+RW 4x
VERBATIM DVD-R 8x, VERBATIM DVD-RW 2x, MAXELL DVD-R 16x, JVC DVD-RW 4x
IWe strongly recommend for good recording quality:
TDK DVD+R 4x/8x/16x, SONY DVD+R 4x/8x/16x, MAXELL DVD+R 4x/8x/16x, SONY DVD+RW 4x,
MAXELL DVD-R 8x/16x, MAXELL DVD-RW 4x

Good Luck!

Samsung SHW08A DVD±RW doesn't burn dvd+r

Its because you need a firmware update. The media you are currently using isn't recognized. I stumbled in here with the same problem. I haven't been able to find an update, so I will probably have to try a different brand of disc myself. The burner worked fine until I tried using a new pack of Verbatim discs.

DVD disc recording

Certain disc only work in certain recorders - I know this sound weird but you must find the disc that is compatible with the recorder that you are using. If the TDK discs is working continue to use the TDK discs. Even though the format and the specifications are the same on both disc, the readers does not read all disc.

Won't Read blank disc!!

Ok, I talked to Samsung support again today, and they confirm that the firmware update should correct the problem of incompatibility with 1-16x discs. They are going to mail a CD with the firmware update to me, at no charge. They were not, however, able to tell me if the file I had originally downloaded from their website was the same as what will be coming on the CD. Sheesh!!

If I can determine that they are the same file, I will post such info. here later. Otherwise, I would advise contacting Samsung support and requesting a disc.

Problems recording DVD-R 16X

Try this download page to update your firmware from 25/10/05, so if you bought your writer before this date maybe this will work, otherwise buy 8x discs. http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/firmware.htm#710 The faster the discs are burned the more chance of errors there are, you should write at slower speeds for better quality.

If you switched to a different brand of DVD's try using the brand you used before. DVD burners are tested with certain brands of DVD's and sometimes the brands that aren't on that list don't work.
