Yes, this is a fairly common laser problem with DVD / CD writers when they start to go out, and is almost always the first symptom they start to display. Sometimes they will even read "retail" discs still, but not blank, or burned discs. You are going to want to replace the drive, luckily they are very inexpensive now-adays.
