Question about Samsung Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

Samsung BCE1197 oven stopped working after making a noise which I think may have been the fan, maybe something caught in the fans blade or a mechanical problem, anyway I changed the fuse in the plug, still no good, having looked on the internet at other problem pages I think there maybe another fuse internally, however I do not know how to locate it, also I understand there is a capacitor, how do I discharge it safely without harming myself, is there anything else I should be looking for that has stopped the oven?

Fan making a noise

I would bet that the blade is loose on the shaft.

Sometimes glue can fix that.

Smh9187w vent fan popping noise

There are no bulletins covering a recurring issue with the exhaust fan on this model, so I would suspect the failing motor, an obstruction in the blades, a loose blade assembly, or a damaged wire arcing to the frame.

It will take some visual inspection with the oven removed from the wall (see your installation instructions) and the cover removed.

The service manuals for the variants are here:

Fan makes a terrible rattling noise

The fan blade may have come loose from the shaft or the fan motor bearings are shot. Repair is accomplished by replacing the blade or motor. If the fan is not operating correctly the magnetron will star to overheat and the oven will shut down.

don;t worry;
all you need to do is lubricate the fan bearings with light machine oil and make sure the fan is not hitting anything

I have a ge above range spacemaker xl1800 it seems to work fine except their is a rattling noise when its running it sounds like a bad fan or something comeing loose it seems like its comeing from under...

The noise you are hearing is due to the fan. The fan is used to cool the magnetron during cooking, and because this fan is not working the magnetron is overheating and the thermal protector is opening, killing power to the unit. All you need to fix this is a new fan blade. The fan blade(look for part #80) is slipping on the motor shaft ( the noise you are hearing).

GE XL 1800

If the blade is broken then you can buy a new one from---

GE FAN BLADE

Please ask for further clarifications.

A Fixya rating would be appreciated if you find it useful.

Noise on starting up

If the unit is cooking ok, then it sounds like possibly your cooling fan has the blower wheel rubbing and when the rpm's come up, the blower wheel migrates away from the rubbing surface. It is very common for a blower wheel to loosen up, or a bearing in the bottom end of the blower to fail, causing the sound.
If you dare to venture into the unknown, you can investigate the noise and maybe be able to adjust the attitude of the blower wheel or fan blade, which ever is loose

Post me if I can be of more help.

Thank you,

Yes, the fan blade is hitting something inside.Usually by opening the microwave, you can slide or reposition the plastic fan blade on the shaft.Probably this happened in shipping to the store where you bought it.CAUTON:make sure the unit is unplugged before you attempt this.Other option is return for replacement.

GE Microwave vent fan replacement.

First of all, if it's just the plastic (nylon) fan blade that's melted, most any fan blade should work. I'd take the blade and motor to a local appliance parts shop and see if they have just a blade assembly that would fit. Normally the shaft diameter is standard and the only consideration is to get a blade assy whose outside diameter and thickness are the same or a little less than the original. Concerning the original part # you gave there are 3 Samsung parts that match up on http://www.samsungparts.com : Part Number Description Specification Price DE31-10178A MOTOR-VENTILATION SMV-260UA,120V,60Hz,31 $67.78 DE31-10178B MOTOR-VENTILATION SMV-260UA-1,-,-,-,-,-, $70.09 DE31-10178E MOTOR VENTILATION SMV-260UA-N,-,-,120V60 $67.87 Lastly, if there happen to be any numbers on the blade assembly itself, you can check them to see if they're good numbers at http://www.samsungparts.com Good luck!
