One of the gear in the roller mechanism is either displaced and not in alignment with other gear wheels OR the gear blades is broken. You have to take the assistance of technician from service center to open the printer and change the part. You can not do it your self.

1- empty paper tray.

(If smooth not grinding noise, check the toner cart OPC drum for jam. If yes check the fusser drive gear and fusser gear and assembly)

Hp 4L printer won't pickup paper from tray. Sequence- green led light- motor running but with grinding- no movement from pickup roller or foot- finally a misfeed led light.

That is a very common problem with the Laserjet 4L and 4P printers. The sound you hear is caused by a broken motor drive gear. This is a small plastic gear on the drive motor shaft. They can develop a small crack which prevents the motor from turning the gears for paper pickup and toner movement. When the motor tries to turn the broken gear can not turn the other gears and makes the popping or grinding sound when the gear teeth slip. You will need to replace the motor gear, it is available here:

I hope this helps,

WHEN BY 4L STARTS, THERE IS A STRANGE SOUND NEAR THE MOTOR. THE PAPER IS NOT BEING PICK UP AND THE PRINTER IS INDICATING NO PAPER. THE SOUND IS LIKE GEARS GRINDING

Your plastic main drive motor drive gear has cracked. I have seen this many times. There is a small plastic gear that is press fit onto the motors drive shaft. It eventually cracks so that the gear just spins on the shaft. It makes a noise and since no other parts of the machine will turn anymore, you get no paper feed.
Here is a link to a picture of the motor as well as a source for the part.

Weird problem - printer works fine but noisy; sounds like gears are slipping. Afraid that it won't last much longer.

Noise is not good. The gears are plastic so they are self lubricating and quiet.

Open it up and check for any obstructions or excess dirt. That may be causeing the gears to bind a bit.

Unforuntetly the gears will eventually break if they are binding and making noise. At that point you should just replace the printer (if not before) as it will not be cost effective to fix it.

I have a epson artisan 800 I'm tring to fax from the automatic feeder but it keeps making a grinding sound and then it says paper jam but paper never even went through

I took apart my artison 800 with 'paper jam' error and grinding noise. Sadly enough, it is the plastic gear attached to the stepper motor which is slipping and making the grinding noise. I tried to glue it and it worked once or twice and failed again. It is a design flaw and Epson should repair this for free if they are honest about this problem. Ir is not a user-caused problem.

Hey andydfw,

If it's those gears that are slipping, 1) you can look at the way the round gear is seating. It needs to be inline with the teeth, if when your looking at the teeth you should notice one of the gears might have some missing teeth, or is worn down to the point the the connecting gear doesn't catch. This will only tell you were the gear problem is.

To repair it: Well, you'll have to go through brother to get a replacement part, and I've seen in the past where they don't sell anything but the basic consumables. How old is the printer? If it's under warranty, Go HERE, and put in your zip code that will get you someone close. If it is under warranty, then it no charge to you to have it repaired. If it not under warranty, he will have both of those gears. He'll examine the threads, and he can determine which one is slipping, or what's wrong with it. It normally doesn't make that type of noise otherwise their something a bit more complicated that warrants seeing an authorized repair guy.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks Mark

Grinding noise at startup paper jam indication (alarm flashes 3 times) no paper stuck in printer sounds like plastic gear is not meshing grinding sound occurs twice during powerup

definitely sounds like the drive gears are stripped, did it jam and someone pull paper out by hand this is major cause of stripped gears. generally fixing is not cost effective cheaper to buy new

Will not feed paper

Sounds like the gears are out of alignment for the paper pick up tray.

Epson Stylus CX3200 ( loud noise like paper is jammed) error message comes up.

By pulling the paper out backwards your sister may have caused a gear to jump. You could try pulling a piece of paper out in the other direction and maybe the gear will jump back into place. Otherwise you will probably have to have the printer serviced.

Loud clicking noise

Power the machine on with drum and toner removed, check for noise....

It will be either the Fuser, Toner or the drum.

If it is non gen. or refill toner, fault found.

The drum is a normal consumable that you change every 3 to 4 toner cartridges, so if any of you have used more than 4 toners and havent changed the drum, I'd say that we have found your problem.

......now to the hangers on .....

Fuser, thats the hot bit at the back, these have a gear that cracks because the whole fuser assemble is old, brittle and stiff, you can pull it all apart and change the gear and be off, but soon it will more than likely break again, I know cause if I do that as the fix they come back within 6mnts.

Replace fuser, or have it replaced

Fuser is a HiVolt, HiTemp part. Caution!!!!
