Safe mode usually occurs when the Shut down process was abnormal.

Safe mode starts the computer with minimal use of drivers.

For XP, there should be a reboot normally option.
This should boot the computer back in normal mode.

My display screen goes on and off

I find sleep mode nothing but trouble, eventually corrupts window files over extended use, go into power options, go to stand by and select never and click apply, next go to hibernate "top right" and click, make sure the check box is clear, if not! remove check and click apply and restart your laptop.

How do I get the Latitude D505 BIOS to see a new hard drive

1. First off all Dell computers are Plug and Play but just to be sure try reseating the hard drive detaching and putting it back in

2.. Turn the computer over. Use a standard #1 Phillips screwdriver to remove the two M2.5 x 5-mm screws.

roadfox_12.jpg 3. Slide the hard drive out of the computer.

4. Remove the new drive from its packaging.

5. Save the original packaging to use when storing or shipping the hard drive.
NOTICE: Use firm and even pressure to slide the drive into place. If you force the hard drive into place using excessive force, you may damage the connector.

6. Press the hard drive cover down until it is fully seated in the bay, and then replace and tighten the two screws.

roadfox_13.jpg 7. Go to the BIOS and Restore the BIOS to its factory defaults in order to detect the hard drive

My new compaq PC went to sleep overnigt and I had to disconnect the power to get it wake up!

May be your laptop was hanged in standby or hibernation mode. You can turn off your computer by holding the power button for around 20 seconds.
Thats not a problem to be worried about, you can reprogram the settings to make sure that the settings were saved in the way you wanted.
Hope this helps.
Please feel free to ask me any further.

I can not find the volume control on my latitude d505. Please help! The fn and page up or page down keys are not working.

Try fn and end to turn the speakers on and off. you might have turned them off by accident.

Latitude d505 won't display image through projector. Being used with Sanyo plc XU41 and Promethean board. Board is interactive but no help if there is no image to see! Other Dell laptops work with this...

Dell laptops normally have a 3-way toggle for the display destination: 1=screen 2= external display and 3=Both. To toggle from one mode to the next press hold the 'FN' key (lower left corner of the Key board), and the briefly press the 'F8' key. Wait a few seconds for the hardware to catch up and you should see a display through the projector. If not, repeat the 'Fn' + 'F8' combo again.

You could also try running diagnostics to verify that teh video card is working properly. To do that, sthar with the laptop off. Hold the 'Fn' key down while you press the power button. Release both as the machine begins to boot up. It should start in diagnostics mode. Run the quick test and watch for the color bars. If you see then, the video card so=huold be OK.

Good luck, And please let me know how it turns out for you.
