Question about GE Cooktops

1 Answer

My jgp389 cooktop has a problem with the burner knobs. One by one, you can no longer push them down and twist to start the gas flow. Now only one is working. I think too much gunk has gotten down inside of them over years of use without proper cleaning. I tried to take the top cover off to get to the base but without success. Is this fixable or do I need to get a new knob unit altogether?

I have to say that I am pretty handy at identifying how to take things apart and fix/clean them, but I do not fully understand your terminology. I think mine are sealed. I have taken the knobs off and everything else that has screws to try to get down to the base of things and have already cleaned them. The stems that the knobs are attached to will not push down at all on 3 of 4 of them. The 4th one is getting very sticky now and I am having a hard time turning it once I push it down. If you think they need to be replaced at this point, will I need 4 of them or it it a whole unit? Also, does the gas input have a shutoff built into the unit when I take the parts off or will I need to shut it off from the source?

Hello,

The problem is too much gunk/dirk on the knob control switch, you will need to clean the knob control switch first and see if there is difference, if not, then replace all the knob switch. lift the lid of your cooktop up. Give it a rap with the heel of your hand if it's stuck. If your cooktop has sealed burners, identified by the igniter or little nub at the back of each burner, the lid wont shift. Lift the burner assembly off the support arm as you slide it away from the burner valve port. It just rests there. Remove the shipping screws if they're still in place and clean the switch knob one after the other, if the problem still persist after cleaning the switch knobs, it means they are worn out, replace them all.

Take care.

    Hello,

It is better you shut it off from the source, this will help secure it more. The whole four knob are to be replaced to fix the problem.

Are they only sold individually or can I buy them as a set cheaper? I found a site that looks like they sell them but they are $98 each.. ouch.

    Hello,

It is better you get them as a set, you can check either ebay.com or amazon.com to get it.

My 5-burner 36" gaggenau has stopped working. I

Hello.
What the problem is a part in the cooktop that opens to let gas flow to the knobs as soon as they are turned on is bad and no gas coming to surface unit burners. This a safety feature that the German goverment(where Gaggenau is made) requires that part to prevent a gas leak when cooktop is off.

Electric ignitors clicking

I'm sorry that I don't have a solution for you, but my Miele gas stove does the same thing. I had a repairman come out while it was under warrantee and they fixed it, but it was only temporary. It's doing it again, but, of course, it's no longer under warantee and will be very expensive to have Miele come out again. I've found that it's the right front burner that causes the clicking, so I've just stopped using it.

When turning on the burner, the gas does not always flow

There is usually a switch under the knob thaat controls the electrical sparker. OFTEN these get messed up when the area around the knob is cleaned and water gets behind the knob.

Cook top burner knobs all 4 not able to turn

Hello,

Just to be clear, non of the 4 burner controls/knobs will turn ? You are familiar with this unit are you ?

Typically you must push down and turn to activate them.

Let me know if that is not the solution.

Good Luck :)

Miele gas cooktop flame shuts off after lighting. If I keep the button down longer to allow more gas to flow to the burner it will stay on.

I had similar problem.Solved by Miele tech by placing rice grain sized wad of paper towel inside knob so it sits slightly higher on the valve shaft.

After cleaning, one burner won't stop clicking

Sounds like the shaft moved slightly as you pushed on the knob. Just pull it back off and try again.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. There are a few things to check for. Make sure the electrode (the small metal piece that the spark comes off from) is clean and the holes in the burner are clean, use a pin or paper clip to clean out the burner holes and not a tooth pick as these can break off and make things worse. Example of a burner. The next thing to check for are the ignition switches under the surface control knobs, the switches can twist and break and keep the spark module on and the spark keeps "clicking" even when the burner is light. If every thing looks good, you may have a bad spark module, replace it.
The switches or the range control knobs may have got wet and are completing the circuit to the spark module thus causing it to continuously click or fire off sparks continuously. Use your hair/blow dryer and blow some hot air around the spark module area.

This is a typical spark module wire diagram--

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

Dead burner on kitchenaid gas cooktop?

it is strange that you have no gas and no spark! if you held a match to the burner and turned the burner valve on it would lite di spite a failed ignitor, but for it not to lite, the burner valve[its what the knob attaches too] would have to be blocked[thats rare]or ........i got it .....the knob is broken.thats the only thing the burner valve and the spark ignitor have in common.try a knob from another burner................again.you have spark, because others are working.spark on troubled burner would work if valve blocked at orifice outlet, and if spark failed you would still get gas they work independent of each other,[but in unison].thats why im thinking knob.its the item that works both .when you turn the knob it opens the gas valve and as the gas valve rotates by turning the knob it activates or turns the spark switch so it closes the curcit allowing the electricty to the spark moduel.hey i hope that helps a little. God bless ,tom

suspect problem is with the regulator on the gas bottle as it would be unusual for all burners to be faulty at the same time. try substituting a new regulator
