Question about Garmin GPS

I have a ADV3500PC touch screen with built in GPS. I have installed nroute, Gpsgate, mapsource with Gamap SAS Topo NNT 2010.01. Nroute displays searching for Satellites but does not find Satellites. Any ideas. Thanks

I have installed and handled quite a few of these units.

Some seem to have a bit of a temperamental GPS receiver. When ever one of the units did not want to pick up satellites, I just disable the GPS receiver in the application and enable it again. I prefer GARMIN Mobile PC on these units.

You could also order and external antenna for these units. Any antenna with a MCX connector will do the trick. I bought from e-bay for about R180.

Its not a antenna problem this unit came with ndrive mapping and routing and the gps receiver / antenna works fine. Maybe I should contact Garmin for a solution.

Hi,

There is a possibility that the antenna is defective. Sometimes a factory reboot helps or re-burn of the firmware. One way to confirm an antenna problem is to go into the tools menu and select "about". If the screen says "GPS S/W = 0.0 (should be a real number like 2.9 or 3.0) then this indicates that your antenna is not communicating with the main board.In this case, you need to send the unit to the manufacturer.

    I do not have the manual for this model.So, it would take some time for me to pull up the manual and check the options on this model. However, this is a common problem on most of the gps. 95% it is due to faulty antenna.If you have the manual, you could try to reboot, if that helps. Unless, sending the unit to the manufacturer is prudent as it would be need to reconfigure antenna or re-flash the firmware.

    You could contact Garmin as well. However, as i suggested, it seems more like an internal failure. I am sure even they cannot tell you the quote before checking the Gps, however could provide you with an estimate amount. The contact information for Garmin is :-

    That's fine :).If there is any hardware fault, i could only guide you to make sure that you do not have to contact Garmin for something you could fix. However, as we have seen this is an internal failure, unless you want to repair it , you need to send the unit for repair.

Can I connect the 205 garmin to my PC and have the display on the PC act as my navigation device?


Yes there is a discontinued Garmin software product called nRoute that allows your laptop to sue your gps to provide realtime info onto any mapsource map, as well as provide voice prompting and auto-routing etc.

This is a discontinued product since I guess some lawyer figured that using a laptop while driving was a bad idea. NRoute is available online if you google around for it though.

HOW DO YOU LOAD MAPS TO THE GPS UNIT?


You will need to load the MapSource software on your PC then load the maps into MapSource. After the maps are loaded and unlocked you can plug your GPS into your PC with the USB cable and load the maps.

I have an Etrex Vista C. I have had it for about 4 years. I am trying to install "TOPO U.S.A. 2008" USB data into the Garmin Etrex from the computor. However, it does not appear to be loading. It doesn't...


How are you installing?

You need to have Mapsource running, select the Topo USA 2008 maps to show on your screen. Use the Map Select tool, and select all the maps you want to send to the unit. Then hit the Send to GPS at the top and a pop up window asks what you want to send. Select Maps.

If this is what you have done already, please come back and tell us and we'll trouble shoot from there.

GPS position is offset from map location


This could be because your datum and your posistion format. Under your menu go to setup, then units and make sure you have the correct info set in there for your area. NAD27 Canada would be the one you are looking for. Give that a try and see if it works. If it is still off, consult the manuals that came with your topo and see if it says what datum it uses.

Map down load


You can view segments of the maps at the Garmin site and it will show you how much detail there is.
Go to http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/topous.jsp#
and on the far right side of the page, you'll see a link to Mapsource Map Viewer Topo USA 2008. Click on that and zoom in to your area.
Yes, you can download the map segments to your unit.

There should be instructions that come on the DVD. You may also visit this site for the latest MAPSOURCE software, version 6.13.5 as of Nov 20,2007.
