Here is a Microsoft article I found that has all the main steps I normally recommend in one concise article.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/northrup_restoreperf.mspx

If doing the items listed there, do not give you a satisfactory result, then you may want to look at spyware/adware as a possible cause.

Spybot Search and Destroy available for free from www.download.com is a good free tool to combat spyware.

Acer 5542 freezes

You can start by checking the Event Viewer. Right click My Computer / Manage. Check System for Errors and Warnings. They can be very technical, but most likely there is some event. Check Application as well. There is a Filter option under View. Leave Warning and Error checked.

A helpful tip.
Slow Windows Machine! Sounds like not enough resources such as RAM and CPU. Check Performance in Task-Manager (CTRL-ALT-DELETE). Try disabling startup programs. Go to Start > Run (search in Win 7) and type MSConfig. Startup tab and uncheck anything that you don't want Windows to load automatically. It will make Windows boot faster and use less resources while running. This just disables them in startup. Programs will still load, but when only you initiate.

My Dell Inspiron will not start up all the way. When I turn it on desktop comes up after about 10 minutes and then everything freezes. Its slow as hell to start up and most times it will even freeze up...

ur boot files are being corrupted either there is a trojen or a virus that's preventing the Win from working.
do this...when u switch on the machine press F8 function key and try to load in Safe Mode. if u can do that then get Tuneup Utility from my website (download page) www.sureshayyar.110mb.com
install and run the cleanup process...1n click maint in that does a good job...use all the toos in that and get ur machine to working....
else u need to boot from a Win CD try do a repair of ur OS....

Computer slowed so far down it takes minutes when I click on an I

Have you looked to see what programs are running in the background? Open your Task Manager and look and see what is taking up the most CPU cycles. If it is a task that is running in the background try ending the process and see if that helps. Then look in the Start menu and see if anything new has been added.

You didn't state what the software was that you were installing. I would need that information to look and see if there are any known issues with it.

Disable the start up features on the wireless, if it has an enable/disable function. This will increase the boot speed, but you will have to manually turn on the wireless or search wireless connections manually. This is a common annoyance, doesn't quite qualify as problem, but there is no win win situation with this. Either you have slow start up or manual wireless.

I can't figure out what my problem is..

Try using Mozilla firefox, which loads straight to Google. If that works use that for internet. If it does work, try uninstalling windows Internet Explorer and reinstalling it. Also make sure you download all windows updates as this will fix most issues with IE!

It's very possible that you have a memory chip that is malfunctioning or failing. Also you can try opening the start menu and deleting everything out of the start up section under programs. Another thing you can do is, go to filehippo.com and download CCleaner. Run it under the cleaner and registry tabs. It's a very useful tool and will help clean out the built up **** in your machine. Try these and let me know if it persists.

Inspiron 1150 Slow startup, slow printing, unable to run 2 programs at once

What Operating System do you run? If it is Windows XP SP2 (Home Edition or professional), here are some things you can do to speed up your system. 1st you should remove all programs that are not required from the start menu. Start > Run > Msconfig > startup tab. Unselect all that are not necessary. Also Right click on my computer > properties > Advanced > Performance settings > Adjust for best performance. This should speed things up a little. I would recommend atleast 512 MB of memory to run Windows XP and its applications decently. You should consider an upgrade.

Fan Running, computer heating, task bar disappearing, everything is slow

It sounds like you've already started doing some things that can help you discover what is causing this problem, and that's good, but before I offer any more ideas, can you please tell me two things:

1. How much RAM (memory) does your computer have?

2. How much total hard disk space does your computer have, and of that, how much is available?
