TECH MAG 6 TRAINER gets hot and makes noise after I use it for about 15 minutes

Sounds as if it is not ventilating the heat properly, which is causing a safety mechanism to be triggered to shut down the microwave in order to save the motor.
The vent could be blocked, the fan/fanswitch went out, or the heat sync is no longer properly transferring heat. Depending on the age the solution would to call a repair man or replace the microwave. And never use microwave without anything inside of it.

Everything still functions properly on whirlpool microwave model number KCMS185J88 - 3 but it won't actually heat. What may be the problem?

There are usually two separate circuits, one for the magnetron(which does the heating), and one for other functions like fan, light, or turntable. A number of things can cause just the heating to quit. The magnetron circuit has a fuse and it can blow, sometimes for no apparent reason, and sometimes because there is a serious short, such as a shorted hi-voltage diode or failed capacitor. This circuit also has some safety interlock switches that stop the magnetron if they don't function properly for some reason. Because of the dangerous high Voltages associated with these devices, I recommend you take it to a qualified technician. The problems I described, are often not difficult to diagnose by a tech, and frequently, the parts are not costly either. I would take it directly to a tech at a shop to avoid an expensive house call. That way, if it is diagnosed as an expensive repair, you can opt out and cut your losses right there. Or you may get lucky and pay a small labor charge and another small amount for a part.

Controls, heating and turntable function normally, but there is an intermittent failure (approx 80 of the time) where the interior light and blower do not function when the microwave is operating .

follow this test and fix it; God bless you
1)

  1. Light bulbIf your microwave light bulb is not working, perhaps it has blown. The first step is to replace the bulb and power on the microwave. If this does not correct the issue, the next step is to check the socket and wiring to verify if that is the problem.
  2. Light bulb socket & main control boardIf your microwave light bulb is not working after the installation of a new bulb, check the light socket as well as the wiring to ensure they are properly operating. If these sources are functioning properly, the next step is to check for a faulty control board as a possible root cause to your microwave light bulb malfunction.
2)
  1. Exhaust fan motorIf your exhaust fan motor is not running, there are a couple of things that you can check involving the motor to locate the problem. After removing the fan motor, you can manually attempt to turn the fan blades with your hand. If the fan motor is working properly, the blades should spin effortlessly. If this does not occur and the blades are taught, the motor will need to be replaced. Secondly, the fan motor itself can burn out due to time and usage. Using an ohm meter, the exhaust fan motor should read open for continuity. If it does not, then the fan motor has expired and will need to be replaced.
  2. ThermostatAnother part that could cause the microwave exhaust fan to not work is a faulty thermostat. A thermostat gauges the air temperature, which activates the exhaust fan when required. If this part becomes flawed, the exhaust fan will not energize and the thermostat will need to be replaced.
  3. Main control boardIf your exhaust fan is still not working and the microwave fan motor, wiring, and thermostat are operating accurately, the root cause could be with the main control board. Replace the main control board.

MICRO DOES'NT HEAT

First, check to make sure that the door is closing and latching fully and that there is nothing jamming any of those mechanisms. There are safety devices that keep microwaves from turning on if they think the door is open/ajar.

If the door is fine and the rest of the functions (timer, etc.) are behaving, it's probably a busted magnetron. That's the part that actually emits the waves that do the heating. It's a part that can be replaced, but probably cheaper to get a new microwave.

Microwave light turns on and vent fan runs when door is closed. It heats fine and functions work fine. It is not heating or counting down when closed, just light and fan.

Hi,
You have a shorted door switch, not a difficult repair. You will need a micro switch and knowledge of microwave repair to replace this switch.
I hope this answered your question

I'm all for fixing appliances but in your case I would suggest replacement. After 24 years of service the magnetron is probably only putting out half of its rated wattage. It could also be one of the reasons of the no heat condition.

Do not heat any longer, lights, clock and fan work

In situtions such as these it can be considered that the Magnatron has passed on. Co0t of repair often exceeds the value of replacement.
No fuse controls the magnatron separately from the rest of the unit so deem it dead

With the availability of good second hand models on the market via pawn shops like Cash Converters etc one can find a very good unit with 30 day warranty for $50-100 and its already been checked over for defects

Please rate my help++++Thanks for using FIXYA

Turntable turns intermittently so unit will not operate

The turntable fan and light all share the same feed, first check wiring for loose connections the problem though is most likely with the controller

Microwave comes on but does not heat

This means the magnetron is either bad, is not receiving the high voltage it needs (failed diode) and/or the fuse is blown.
You can trouble shoot this yourself with the help of a cheap digital multimeter and a reading of the Chinglish instructions that come with it.
Be advised though; if the magnetron and the diode are OK you can encounter ~ 700 volts on a charged capacitor so let the unit rest unplugged overnight if you intend to poke around in it.
