Problem with datalogic magellan 1000i barcode...

I recently bought a datalogic magellan 1000i barcode reader and when i connected on my com1 port the reader switched on but when i tried it in word to read a barcode from a packet of cigarettes it didn't work.Although it does this noise (beep) when it reads the code but it doesn't bring me the code on my screen!!Any solutions??I would be greatful!!
