How can I transfer data from a tower that has been replaced by a new computer?

There are several ways. I'll offer you some options:
1. Connect the old and new with a special network cable and copy it over.
2. Save the data off the old one on a thumb drive. Copy the data off the thumb drive onto the new system.
3. Pull the hard drive from the old system and mount it in the new one, and copy the data over.
Any of these will work....

How to change the hard drive that contains the operational system in an Acer EasyStore H341 server?

Transfer an Operating System to a New Hard Drive

When replacing an old hard drive, a process known as cloning is the easiest and most thorough method for transferring data between the old and new hard drives.

A cloning utility takes a snapshot of your current hard drive and then re-creates that snapshot on your new hard drive.

The process clones everything, including the operating system, installed applications, settings and personal files.

Create a system restore disk so that you can return your system to its previous condition if an error occurs.

You can use a backup and restore utility provided with your operating system, or find one for free or for purchase on the Internet.

Many cloning utilities can also create system restore disks.

Shut down the computer and remove power.

Physically install the new hard drive.

Restore power and boot up the computer.

Ensure that your operating system recognizes that the new hard drive has been installed.

Pick the cloning utility that works best for you. (See Below for some options.)

Purchase

Base your decision on your operating system and the cost and complexity of the utility.

Install and launch the cloning utility on your old hard drive.

Follow the instructions included with the cloning utility.

Keep the old hard drive as a backup, or reformat it for additional storage space.

or
Copy an OS to Another Hard Drive

Copying an OS or operating system to another hard drive can serve several functions.

Some simply want to move their current operating environment to a new PC, while others are replacing an old system hard drive with a newer one and want to avoid the hassle of updating and reinstalling.

The process of copying your operating system to another hard drive is a very easy one, in fact, and can be accomplished by anyone with nothing more than some software and some time.

Install Acronis True Image and launch it from its installation icon.

A link is provided below for the Acronis free 15-day trial.

Click the "Utilities" button from the left menu bar.

Click the "Clone Disk" button from the right pane of the main program window.

This will cause a dialog box to appear.

Click the "Next" button on the bottom-right corner of the dialog box.

Select the disk with the operating system you wish to copy from the drive list and click the "Next" button.

This will begin an examination of your hard disk that will finish in a few minutes.

Select the destination disk from the hard drive list and click the "Next" button.

Choose the "As-is" option for how you would like to handle your partitions.

This option merely lets you decide whether to keep all partitions on the drive or copy just the data onto one blank partition on the new drive.

Click the "Finish" button, and Acronis will prompt you that your system needs to be restarted to begin the cloning process.

The restart will happen automatically when you click the "Finish" button.

Allow the computer to restart, and Acronis will launch prior to the operating system and begin the cloning procedure.

This process may take several minutes to several hours, depending on the size of the operating system and whether there are any installed applications.

Restart you computer once again after Acronis has completed the cloning procedure.

The software will notify you when the cloning has finished.

Boot into your operating system and use your new operating system installation as normal. You may now remove your old operating system drive or format it as you desire.

Hope this helps.

Just got new HP laptop and i'd like to transfer photo's and some files from my old HP desk top computer. What do I need to do this?

If the old computer still works, see the following. Otherwise look for the * for a solution further below. If the old desktop has Windows XP SP3 or newer, you can use the easy transfer wizard. It is included in Windows 7.

If the old desktop has a network connection, you can use an ethernet switch to create a network to share files. Once both computers recognize the switch, set up a network. If you have Windows 7 on one computer and do not have it on the other, do not use the Homegroup network. This may come up automatically; otherwise, use the Network Control Panel and add a network. Start the Easy Transfer Wizard and set this computer as the new computer. There may be an option to get the Transfer Wizard to copy and install to the old computer. Note the code for the Easy Transfer Wizard. Then install the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard on the old computer and launch it. Set this computer as the old computer. Use the code given in on the first computer to synch the transfer. Go through the settings to select the files to transfer and then start the transfer. Prepare to wait a while for the transfer.

If you can't use the Easy Transfer Wizard, set the hard drive on one computer to Share (click Computer (My Computer) and right click on the hard drive and select Properties. Then choose the Sharing tab. Enable Sharing by clicking the Share button.) On the other computer, map to a network drive and locate the Shared drive. Drag and drop the files to the new computer.

If you already have a network connection to a cable or DSL router, you will be asked about "New network found" and to define it. Make sure to make it the home network on both computers. (If you were directly connected to a cable or DSL modem, then you will again get this question. Note the switch will not let your computers talk to the outside network without a router though.)

(Alternatively, use a cross-over ethernet cable with the direct cable networking option.)

Other options: use the Microsoft Easy Transfer Wizard to put the photos and files on a DVD, external hard drive or flash drive with sufficient capacity. You may need to download and install this program to the old computer. For the optical drive option, you need a DVD-RW drive on the desktop and a DVD reader (minimum) on the laptop. (You can use an external optical drive, if you have one.) Another option is a USB file transfer device. Some of these come with the Easy Transfer Wizard on their install disc.

*If the old computer will not turn on, take the hard drive out of the computer and use a USB to IDE/SATA adapter. Follow the directions for the device and attach it to a USB port on the laptop. See if the drive mounts (is listed when you open the Computer File Explorer). Then drag and drop the files from one drive to another.

Note you may need to change the owner of the files on the new computer. (This doesn't apply with the Easy Transfer Wizard if the old user is made equivalent to the new user in the setup of the wizard.) To change the owner, right click on the file in the File Explorer and choose the Security tab. Select the Advanced settings.

I hope this helps.

How to transfer from old to new computer

If you are using windows Xp - there is a transfer files option that will help transfer files from one pc to another using a serial cable.

To find that option, go to start, programs - accessories and then system tools and slide down to file transfer and follow the prompts.

You can also burn the files you wish to transfer to a cd and insert it in the pc you wish to transfer them to and then open them one by one and save them. You can use a memory stick and save the files to it and then plug it into the usb port of the pc you want to transfer the files to and open the drive then save the files one by one to the new pc.

If the files are not too large in size, you can email them to yourself and then open your email account in the pc you wish to transfer the files to and save them to it.

Hope this helps?

I have a hp a610n and i had the hard drive replaced and now im tring to update the drivers and i am unable to do so.

Hello,

I am not sure how the hard drive was replaced but you should be able to go to HP support, enter your pc model and download the drivers for your system from there. That's the easy way. You can also transfer directly from the old hdd to the new one. (assuming the old one still function) This can be time consuming and if you have any corriupt files, they will be transfered to the new drive as well.

Good Luck
