Get the orange plastic top off the black ink cartridge

With respect to your HP OJ J4680 printer, which uses HP 901/901XL ink cartridges, it sounds like this is either a compatible/clone cartridge from overseas in which case you should not remove the orange top as it is molded into the cartridge, or you recently purchased or had the ink cartridge refilled (at Costco, etc.) and the storage clip (which seals the base of the cartridges to prevent the nozzles from drying out) is attached to the ink cartridge. If this is a storage clip, just press hard on the clips top lever at an angle to remove. See our videos on cartridge care tips and how to troubleshoot an ink cartridge error/problem on the HP OJ J4500, J4600 and OJ 4500 series printer models:

If you need to purchase new HP 901 ink cartridge(s) and are trying to cut costs, we suggest you try a remanufactured ink cartridge from http://www.inkplicity.com/ as their ink cartridges typically have the lowest cost in the USA, have a high reliability rating, come with a 1-year warranty and provide free shipping for all orders above $20.

Hp office jet 5610 wont print colors correctly

Some printer software that detect ink levels won't recognize a cartridge that's been refilled. They treat the cartridge as empty although you've filled them with ink. You can try removing the HP software that pertains to the printing functions only (not the scanner abilities). You can also do a Power reset. Remove the printer cartridges, turn off the power, remove both the Power cord and USB cord (if applicable) for 10 minutes. After reconnecting the USB and power cords, install the cartridges as you normally would. The printer should treat them as new.

J4680 printer cartridge problem with color will not print color

Is this cartridge an HP factory new cartridge?

Most companies build logic into the printer to prevent refilled cartridges or third party cartridges from being used.

They do this because they have protect both the print quality and the printer from damage by poor quality ink.

In the middle of a print job, my cartridge refill stops feeding ink. Printer MN J4680. Does this printer hold the cartridge # in memory in order to stop one from refilling?

HP printers do not remember the cartridge serial number to reject refills (certain Canon printers do though). It sounds like you have an air bubble in the sponge that is inhibiting ink from reaching the print head. I would guess that either you or the store/internet seller that refilled this cartridge hand filled it. These cartridges should be filled under a vacuum to remove air bubbles from the sponge and allow you to fully fill the cartridge (an air bubble takes up space that your ink could be occupying). I recommend Cartridge World or Office Depot for refills. Avoid internet sellers and refill shops that have one giant all-in-one machine that does the filling for them.

Overpriced cartridges

Hi,

Lexmark printers are notorious for over-inking. Probably the most efficient inkjet printer I've owned is an HP (any HP inkjet model). What has become quite popular as of late are refill machines at the local office supply stores. I have my cartridges refilled for less than half the price of new cartridges. Staples and Office Max both have great refill machines, and often have a reserve of pre-refilled (recucled) cartridges that they sell. I do not know your region, but most of the larger office supply stores have these great machines.

Also, if you color print on regular paper a lot, the ink soaks (bleeds) into the paper fibre and tends to waste a lot of ink. If you do not have a largfe office supply store near you, you can purchase refill kits and refill them yourself.(which can be messy, but effective).

Hope this helps.

Refilled Cartridges

I've refilled cartridges twice so far. The first time, the black was completely empty and the color was nearly empty. The printer accepted the color refill and not the black. The second time, I refilled both cartridges before they completely ran dry and both were accepted by the printer. The gauges don't register the ink, but it prints just fine. I just monitor the levels through the print quality. A friend with the same printer has told me that she only get 2 - 3 refills before the cartridge has to be reset, and that is a tricky process, but can be done.

Color

I am assuming from your brief problem description that you are getting bad colors when you changed your color cartridge. Are you using a new and certified HP ink cartridge? Are you doing a refill of your old ink cartridge or have bought one of those "re-manufactured" cartridges? The head in the cartridge is very sensitive - when they are damaged or poorly handled - it could result in cross contamination of the color inks. Hence - the brownish color you see could be the result of that cross-contam. My impression is that the remanufactured or older or continously refilled cartridges may be more prone to getting damaged - maybe bec of inherent wear out. Hope this helps.
