Feel the top of the compressor is it hot? Usually when a compressor will start and stop this is called short cycling and it is caused by a defective start relay, overload and capacitor. Sometimes it it cause by a defective fan which when this happens all parts including a new fan must be replaced

the fan only controls air circulation. not the function of the motor. sounds like ur fridge is stuck in the defrost mode? check ur cold control thermostat with a multi meter for continuity. the fan does not run while in defrost mode, u can manually check ur defrost timer in the fridge by sticking a small screwdriver into the hole underneath it, and turn clockwise till u hear a click u should hear the fan and compressor come on if not turn 1 more click?

Can hear compressor, cois get frosty but fan cuts out after five minutes. Why?

IF THE FAN IS CUTTING OUT U MAY HAVE STUCK TIMER IN THE DEFROST CYCLE MODE BUT MORE LIKELY U HAVE A POWER ISSUE, IS THIS A digital cold control thermostat? if so the control board itself may not be communicating with the thermostat, when the fan cuts out does the compressor keep running? and no clicking sounds?

Freezer is warming- up to 24 degrees now. something is running- should i unplug the freezer to keep the defrost fan from coming on until repairs can be made?

the fan is not a defrost fan? it helps to circulate the cold air into fridge and freezer. so when the fridge goes into defrost mode the fan and compressor stop running. if ur getting constant warm or heat? I suspect ur defrost timer is not coming out of defrost cycle? the heat is only suppose to last up to 20-30 minutes then back into cold mode? hers a trick u can use that may get u back into cold mode, locate the defrost timer in ur fridge usually at top center. then under the timer u will see a tiny slot or hole. if u stick a small screw driver into that hole and turn slowly clockwise till u hear it click? if its stuck in defrost , it will now come out of defrost and u should hear the fan and the compressor come on, hope this helps let me knoiw if u have any more questions

Refrigerator not cooling; Freezer not freezing.

first do u hear the compressor running? any clicking sounds? cold control may be bad? stuck in defrost mode? do u hear the fan running? u can manually take it off defrost mode by placing a small philips screw driver into the tiny hole underneath it the ( cold control thermostat), and turn it slowly till u hear one click this will take it off the defrost mode. if ur problem is the cold control. if that does not work u may have a bad compressor relay and can do a 3 in 1 hardstart and it should kick back in and work agin

My refrigerator is stuck in defrost mode

If your refrigerator is a few years old it may have an electromechanical timer to control the defrost cycle. With age and/or lots of dust the timer motor can wear out or the switch contacts can get stuck.
Behind the grill below the door there should be a small black box with several wires coming out of it. On the front of the box there is a small (dime sized) round disk with a slot in it. This is the defrost timer, a 24-hour clock mechanism which switches the cooling unit off and the defrost heaters on for 15 or 20 minutes every 24 hours (approximately). Insert a small insulated screwdriver into the slot and turn it slowly clockwise until you hear a click. The compressor and fan(s) should turn on (if they aren't running already) and the defrost heaters should turn off. If you continue turning the timer disk you should hear another click and the compressor & fans will shut off and the heaters turn on. Stop turning the disk at this point. Wait a couple of minutes and then turn the disk a few degrees farther (5 degrees represents about 20 minutes). You should hear a click and the compressor starting up again.
If there is no change and the heaters still seem to be on, then you may need to replace the timer (it should unplug from the wiring harness). A Home Appliance Parts store should be able to provide you with a compatible replacement timer.

Refrigerator is stuck in defrost mode.

If the compressor is running and not getting cold I would say that you have burnt out your compressor.
If it was stuck in defrost you wouldn't hear the frig running. When in defrost the compressor stops while the frig defrosts.

Refrigerator was not cold, now freezer is not working either

You hear a fan running - but do you hear the compressor motor running too ? Common problems are defrost timers and refrigerator being stuck into defrost - or control board problems or faulty thermostats - Those defrost timers tend to go bad more frequently on newer refrigerators compared to the older refrigerators !

Stuck in defrost mode after changing timer and thermostat

Amana adaptive defrost:

Press refrigerator light switch five times in six seconds to initiate defrost cycle. Pressing five more times within six seconds will cancel defrost and go straight into the run mode. Similar operation on both bottom mount and SxS refrigerators. After the defrost terminator/thermostat opens, six minutes of dwell time occurs before the compressor and condenser fan motor will operate. After defrost terminator/thermostat open, 10 minutes of dwell time occurs before the evaporator fan motor will operate.

Kitchenaid refrigerator not working

it would not be likely to stuck in defrost mode but my guess would be the compressor is not running. overheated or the condenser is full of dirt. as you said , you can hear fan running, is it inside the ref or outside?..or both?..if that is the case, then it is on freezing mode because the fans would not run on defrost mode..i hope i was able to help..
