Question about Kenmore 53642 / 53644 Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

My Kenmore side by side doesn't freeze or cool. The fan motor still runs but the "freon motor" makes a buzzing noise when trying to run. Is there a fix or is it time to buy a new freezer. This unit was manufactured in 07/2001.

Check to see if the tiny captube near the filter drier is kinked. This sometimes happens when somebody moves the unit or cleans it. If that is ok then you need to see if the low side freon pressure is 5PSI

Mccall FS10-E freezer has been sitting unplugged for two years and now won't cool (I believe it worked before but not 100% sure). When plugged in, there is a constant buzzing from the fan motor. ...

Here are a few thoughts.

Possible a very small freon leak. A low level of freon will cause a "No Cooling" situation.
There is a small possibility that since it sat for so long, that the rings on the compressor may not be sealing properly and the compressor is now "Weak" and does not have the capacity it needs to do the job.
Buzzing from what fan motor? Evap or condenser? If the motor buzzes but runs in the correct direction (rotation) and at the correct RPM. I would not be too concerned about the noise at this time.
I'd start with these items before going any farther.
Let me know if I can be of any further help.

Freezer not freezing

Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload relay.
Check to see if the condenser fan at the back underneath near the compressor is running. If no check fan.

Are the condenser coils near there warm or room temp. should be warm

Is the evaporator fan in the freezer running. It blows cold air into the fridge side through a damper in the wall between the freezer and fridge. Make sure the damper is open.

Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL) or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR PROBLEM).

REFRIGERATOR IS MAKING A BUZZING SOUND, not cooling

You have one of two problems going on. Your fan is spinning at hitting the sides. Or your compressor is shot which seems to be more the problem and even though it is cold the humming sound is a warning for you that the compressor is shot and it is more affordable to replace the fridge then the compressor. Sometimes compressor can cost more then the fridge.

You need to clean your coils under the 'fridge,' and wait 24 hours, if it is not not getting cold, perhaps replace the freon. If that does not work, you need to call a repairman.

Unplug the Ref for 15-20 min., plug it back in and listen for the compressor to start. You will need to be behind the Ref so you can tell if the compressor or the fan is running. It will help to take the cover off so you can see the compressor.
Compressor not running but you hear a clicking noise. The relay needs to be replaced.
Compressor runs but not cooling. Low on coolant

Kenmore Refrigerator: Freezer not freezing

a blocked condenser can cause a warm up situation, and after youve done this you have to wait 24 hours before making desision on out come.but other possiables are condenser fan motor slow, its fan blade dirty.defrost problem, frost on back frezer panel can be a sign of issue.evap fan moving air slow[inside fan]run time,is it running enough[thermostat controls that]if all those ok could be restriction in sealed system, that where the freon curcit.if moisture,or particles they can get caught in the cap tube[small tube to create persure so then freon expans to a gas]that should give you a few ideas.God bless ,tom

Freezer and refrigerator not cooling. Makes a buzzing noise

hello sbarrry2 it sound like the motor that is running continously is the condenseer fan and the buzzing and then the click would be the compressor trying to start up and going off on overlaod. shut the unit off at the swiutch, let it cool down (3) hours possibly and then try to turn it back on. this should work. Thanks for using FixYA
