there should be a lock pin behind the fence that engages the pivoting head that needs to dis-engage before the saw will open up for you. This keeps the head locked down when you are hauling it around

Most often the entire motor doesn't go bad. It would be a componen't like armature, field, brushes, Switch. I very seldomly see a whole motor go bad. look for a single problem. The saw is not junk it is very repairable with some testing of parts.
