Is this an internal or external drive? If it is an internal drive, you need to partition and format the drive. For Windows XP and later, this is available in the drive management service. In Windows 7, click Start > Control Panel > System and Security. Look in Administrative Tools and click on Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions. (Make sure that you have logged in as the administrator.) In the lower section of the window, the new hard drive should show (probably as Disk 1). Select the correct drive (it will probably say unallocated space). Click on Action > All Tasks to find the option to format the disc. If this drive will be used with the current computer or only with the recent Windows OS, format the disc in NTFS. Mac's have a similar utility but HFS is their current file system. If the drive will be used on multiple computers with different OS versions, format it in FAT32.

Other programs (Partition Magic, Partition Manager) will give you more options for formatting.

If this is an external drive, looking for the drive in Disk Management will let you check if the OS finds the disc but has a problem with the format.

I hope this helps.

I bought a StoreJet 25M 640 external hard drive. When i try to use it with my MacBook Pro I am told I have to reformat the HDD. Is this right? How do I do this?

It is dependent on whether you are solely going to use the Hard drive with your macbook or whether you may use it on a PC as well. If you are going to use it with just the mac format it in Mac format if with PC and Mac format it for a PC.

You format the drive using disk utility which can be found by opeing up the applications folder and then the utilities folder. Open up disk utility and then on the left hand side select your hard drive, then select erase from the right. For Mac formatting under Volume Format select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" then name the drive and then click "Erase..." For PC formatting under the Volume Format select "MS-DOS (Fat)" Remember reformatting will wipe any information from the drive.

Hope this helps.

I need to format an HDD for an IBM thinkpad 570e that came without one, and from what a lot of people say, it won't take windows xp pro. I don't have any other OS, so has anyone tried to do this...

Before formatting the drive ....
you will need to save your drivers on a cd/dvd disk if you dont have the original disks

Formatting the drive should be straight forward,
remove it from your machine and take it to another computer,
your IBM Thinkpad should be staight forward to reinstall even without taking your drive to another computer,I found this step easier tho....
after formatting this drive you could just insert to your machine and then reload your software from the beginning providing you have your disks,

You might have a password locked hard drive and or your bios may be locked also ,in this case replace the drive after which your new os install should give you access and functionality,
update your drivers on the internet and SP2 updates will give you hi speed usb 2.0 functionalilty.....

Good luck with the formatting,if you need help let me know,
have a great day

Copying Files to PS3

Check what the "File System" type is by going to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Manager. Select the external drive and read the "File System" type. The file system type must be "FAT32" in order for the Playstation to recognize it.
  • If the file system type is "NTFS", right click and select "Delete Partition" or "Delete Volume" for Vista.
  • then recreate the partition but do NOT format it. Make sure you assign a drive letter (for this Tutorial, we'll use h:)
  • If you are running Windows, format the drive by going to the command prompt (Vista, right click on command prompt in start menu and click "run as administrator")and type in "format h: /FS:FAT32" (without the quotes). You may need to substitute your drive letter. (note this will not work on XP for a large hard drive - you will have to use a third party formatting utility)
  • If you are using Mac OS X, open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app, pick the drive, and click on the 'Erase' tab. Pick 'MS-DOS (FAT)' for the file system type, and click on the 'Erase' button. This will reformat the drive in FAT-32.

There are many ways to format your hard drive but i will tell the two ways.
  1. while you installing the os like windows xp,2000 it ask you to format the hard disk to install the windows operating system. It comes before the copying the files into the hard disk while you install the windows.
  2. Another way is formatting the harddisk is by seagate software like DM (Disk Manger) is comes with the harddrive or you can download the software from the seagate website for free. DM is the software for formatting . so you can format your harddrive by these software.

One Touch 4 Maxstor 750 external hard drive installing on a macbook pro

If you have a hard-drive that is formatted as NTFS which stands for (New Technology File Ssytem), Mac OS X can only read the partition. It cannot write to it.

The trick is to use your drive manfacturer's disk-formatting software which will allow you to format your drive as one large partition. Formatting your drive as one large FAT 32 partition is the easiest way to make a drive so it can be used with both PC's and Mac's.

Another option is to use a third part utility so that you can read a MAC formated harddrive's from your PC. Here is one option: http://www.macdrive.com/.

Good luck.

HDD wont get formatted

Hi, maybe the easiest way for you to format this drive would be if you could attach it as a secondary drive in a pc that is currently working and then try formatting it in the desired format from within windows. Windows will recognize a drive it only needs to format it in order to access it for data storage. You may need to change the jumper setting to slave on the HDD before you plug it in.

If you need any help with this just let me know.
