Question about Toro Super Recycler Super Bagger Lawn Mower Rear Bagger 5

1 Answer

I have a Toro super recycler model 20017 with a tecumseh motor, model LEV120, spec 361541B has spark and is getting fuel but will not start any suggestions? Have already replaced coil cause previously had no spark. I have taken apart and cleaned the carburator. Also tried the spark plug in a different mower to see if it was the problem but started that mower with one pull.

Make sure that the doggone brass bolt that holds the carb bowl on was cleaned as well. It is the main jet and has tiny holes that get clogged from evaporated fuel/varnish and debris (if no inline fuel filter is used). It has holes on the bottom and the smooth part of the sides...it needs to be clean and shiny! If all is well and the motor is an OHV, then maybe the valves need adjusting.

Make sure you air cleaner/intake system is clear and clean. (when working on these I have been known to leave a paper towel piece in the intake tube to keep dirt from entering)....and a no start condition was born!

I did take the bowl nut off and clean; holes were not plugged but had some build-up. Turns out the cable from the handle to the kill switch had some slack due to age and was not fully disengaging. Tightened it up and 1 pull and running like a top. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you're Toro electric blower is slowing down, throwing sparks, overheating or not starting you may need to replace the carbon brushes. Replacing brushes and cleaning commutator early can prevent damage to motor armature!
There are Electric Motor replacement carbon brushes on E-bay for all three motor sizes (7 AMP, 10.5 AMP, and 12 AMP) of Toro Leaf Blowers (Toro Rake and Vac Super and Ultra Blower and "850" Vacuums)
Search E-bay for: "Toro Blower Carbon Brush"
- 12 Amp leaf blowers Toro Super (Old model 51552) through Toro Ultra (New model 51609).
- Toro 850 Super Blower Shredder-Vac 12 Amp (model 51575).
- 10.5 Amp leaf blowers Toro Old through Toro New model 51573.
- 7 Amp leaf blowers Toro model 51586 and other Toro 7 amp blowers.

The way i set the govenor is, slacken the screw on the engine govenor arm, push the arm fully over to open the throttle wide open, now turn the actual govenor shaft within the arm in the same direction, fully retighten the govenor arm screw,

Toro Electric Start Problem

Remove spark plug and observe condition. Fouled with oil, bad motor. With plug removed pull rope several times to blow out cylinder. Spray WD40 in spark plug hole, pull rope several times see if oil blows out. Spray a lot of starter fluid in spark plug hole, replace plug. Spray starter fluid in air cleaner area of carb, try to start. Replace spark plug, try to start. Ensure oil is full, all mowers have a low oil sensor now. 30w oil. Always use Stabile in gas.

My spark plug wire was damaged. I went to Toro dealer and bought a new coil, and new rubber boot for spark plug. It was easy to replace, but after it started up, which it always does on first pull, I...

The contact point that grounds out the spark is not connecting. Take it apart back down to where you have access to the coil and check the mechanism and and the wire to ground out the spark.

Toro recycler 20017 is very hard to start. it has to be primed many times. after it run a while it starts on one pull.

The carburetor may need to be serviced. You need to find a parts shop that handles Tecumseh parts. You will most likely need a rebuild kit for the carburetor. The carburetor part number is 640303. The rebuild kit is 632809. The Tecumseh engine company shut its' doors 3 years ago. Finding parts is becoming harder and harder. I've heard that someone has bought Tecumseh over the winter but it is unknown when the new parts will hit the market. Best of luck to you.
