Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My computer went into safe mode after a power outage then I believe my son restored the computer and now lost many things and yet if you dig, you can find some of the old photos, etc. But, it keeps telling me no more room and some things are locked somewhere away and I had to download a new printer etc. Nothing was working.

Control button locked. when I turn ooff PC the sleep light will not turn off.

Typically, the computer is defaulted to stay turned off after an electrical outage. To start the computer from scratch again, hold the power button in for several seconds. If it powers off, wait a minute, then hold the button in again to start it. When the screen comes up that says it didn't shut down properly, choose Safe Mode without networking. It will look like it is hanging on several files, normal, let it go. The screen & icons will be large because it is in default VGA mode. Once it stops loading, go to the Start Button & choose Restart. Things will return to your chosen default settings and most things will work again providing you have an EMI/RFI Surge Protector power strip that everything was plugged into. I have had several fail after a power surge, they are supposed to. Some have insurance should you have electrical damage after a power surge that got beyond the strip. Ultimately, $15-$50 is cheaper than your PC &/or monitors damaged by not having one, they are designed to be the Sacrificial Lamb & be the cheap breaking point.

As an added note, people confuse Sleep Mode with Hibernate Mode. Sleep mode means anything you are working on gets suspended into your available memory while it goes into Power Saving mode. On a power loss, all will be lost, save regularly if you use this mode.

Hibernate uses a space on your hard drive to write the information. Power loss, nothing is lost and on waking up or powering back on, your data will still be where you left off, usually intact. To restore from either mode without electrical loss, hit the ESC key. Exceptions will occur if you use Hibernate mode but only have a power strip for your multiple plugs. A power surge can still damage your computer because it wasn't blocked by the EMI/RFI power strip.

How do you know which one you have ? If you only have an On/Off power switch, you have an unprotected power strip. If you have a button on the side of that switch, known as a Reset Switch, you have a protecting one. Even if the Reset Button doesn't restore the power strip, it gave it's blife to protect your computer equipment. Cheap insurance.

Good luck.

Was working fine, a power outage occurred and now I'm getting a menu that states to select several options; 1 being Safe Mode, Last working configuration, etc....Each option that I have tried jus

Try booting up in safe mode, and then do a system restore to a point before the power outage. It wouldn't hurt to try that, and i will look back on here and see if you were able to do it

Due to an electrical outage, desktop computer (Sony Vaio VGC-RB30), lost power and would not reboot. A small blinking green light on the back panel was the only thing happening. Is this a hard disc problem...

this usually mean the power supply went bad and is in safe mode.(so other component in the computer won't get damaged) try unplugging the computer from the wall and wait 10 minutes. If you plug it in and the green light is still flashing the power supply is the most likely thing that is wrong. you can take the power supply to a local repair shop and they can test it in a few seconds. my guess is that it is bad. (please rate)

My dell dimension e521 will only start up in safe mode ther was a power outage since then i can not use the computer,

Probably corrupted some importand windows system files.
Boot in safe mode, and do a system restore.

Start, Accesories, System Tools, System Restore..
Choose a restore date. The last one in there will likely do it.
Allow it to do it's thing.. Should be all good. Cross your fingers..

Computer will not boot up after power outage while running update

OK well if you can boot into Safe Mode, press F8 at bootup, then do so, and try a System Restore, back to a time before you had a problem Otherwise you will have to re-install your Operating System.

Can't get computer out of safe mode

From Windows Safe Mode click Start / Shutdown and restart the computer. This should start the computer automatically back into Normal Mode.
Note: Many users believe that they are still in Safe Mode because the colors or video may not look correct. Unless in the corners of the screen it says "Safe Mode", you are not in Safe Mode.
If you are rebooting the computer and it is rebooting back into Safe Mode (it does say "Safe Mode" in each of the corners), it is likely another problem exists with Windows preventing it from loading into Normal Windows.

I'm getting a lot of errors on my PC. Would like some advice about safe mode. Is it wise to use it and what would I lose of my desk top if I went ahead and used it. Would I lose all my files. It is really...

Hi,
Safe mode will not delete any files or documents saved on the system.
Safe mode only loads basic drivers that the system needs to operate, it is used for resolving problems with the PC. The audio, graphics and network (internet connection) are all disabled when you boot into safe mode.
Don't worry, safe mode is exactly as its name describes itself.

If you need anymore advice please post back.

Regards.

Battery went flat and laptop turned off pluged laptop charger in laptop was unable to bootup properly and then keeps rebooting and rebooting.

Try and go into safe mode and select system restore. To get into safe mode press F8 before as the computer begins to boot. When you get to safe mode press start and then select program files and select accerioes, under that heading select system tools and click on system restore. Follow instructions and select 2 days or the lastest restore point in order to restore system back to it's original state.

If you cannot reboot at all to safe mode, you will require to restore the system or reinstall windows using you xp, vista or recovery disks for laptop. Good Luck!
