Question about Yard Machines 158cc Push Lawn Mower #11a 034f200

Open Question

I have a 173cc MTD Yard Machine lawnmower and it will start and run until it gets warm and then shut off. I have replaced the spark plug and the air filter is clean. Any Ideas as to what could be causing the mower to kill once it gets hot?

SOURCE: I have an mtd yard man mower that wont stay

I was having the exact same problem with my 6.5 hp Toro lawnmower with a Tecumseh engine. The engine would start up okay but after a few minutes of mowing, the mower would start missing and eventually shut down. I would pull and pull and pull on the starter rope, getting angry and frustrated and eventually going back in the house to let it cool down.

I looked up all kinds of information and I finally decided it was a bad coil (something about the resistance being low when the mower wasn't hot and then when it heated up the coil would conduct enough electricity to somehow make the engine shut down.)

I called a local shop and wanted to get an estimate on replacing the coil. I have no clue about engines so I dared not get into the guts of the mower myself. He told me to check the gas cap. HUH??????

He told me to make sure there wasn't a part missing out of it. I thought, what the heck would a gas cap have to do with the engine shutting down. Well, apparently there is a mechanism on these caps that prevents a vacuum from pulling on the fuel system and my gas cap indeed had a part missing. To verify this, I cut the grass for about 5 minutes. When it started to run rough, I took the gas cap off to allow pressure to escape from the gas tank and voila! it started to purr like a kitten.

So, I'm only out $4 for a new gas cap and I'm as good as new. Man I wish I was more mechanically inclined so I hope your problem is as easy to solve as this one.

Hope this helps!

SOURCE: My 2 year old Yard Machine 21in 139cc MTD engine

Sounds like you will need to clean your carburetor.
Sometimes you can get by with priming it a few times, and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
If the mower/weedeater is over a couple years old, then I also recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, You will first seat the jet screws and count the number of turns it takes to seat the jets from their original position.
That way when you go to put the jets back in, you know how many turns they were in/out.
Please do not forget to rate me, Thanks
Good Luck, I hope this helped

Why does yardworks 173cc bs engine will start, run, for 2-3 seconds then stop

Bad gas. Drain gas and refill with fresh gas with Stabil. Old oil. Drain oil fill with fresh 30w oil, 16-18oz. Clean air filter and spark plug.. Relpace air filter if dirty. Saving $$$ on this simple tune up is not intelligent.

2008 mtd lawnmower tries to start when sprayed with carb cleaner but stops after 3 seconds

If the spark plug is in great condition, remove and clean the carburetor. This will require soaking if needed with a good solvent or carb cleaner and compressed air to blow out the tiny passages that are clogged for the idle jet circuit and high speed circuit.

My MTD lawnmower is always shut off when the grass is a little bit longer. It's as of not enough power. What's wrong with it?

It may need a good tune up. New plug, air filter may need to be replaced. Also there may be water in the gas. drain gas add fresh gas. Also the carbs mixture may be off. Too much air or too much fuel. hope you get it going.
