DVD+/- Gateway issue DVD won't burn DVDs but plays them

Hey I've been having the same problems as some of the other folks thats replied above. I can watch dvds and record cd's fine, but to no avail can I burn a damn dvd. I have used these plain white dvd's ( but I know they work fine because I've used them before to back up music and other files and they've been great) but for some reason the dvd burner won't work now to burn . The cds, like I said will burn fine. I've tried Ashampoo, Cyberlink, Cheetah and they all won't work for the burning of a dvd and the Ashampoo usually always works fine. I had Gateway do a remote desktop & we've checked the drivers and used the uninstall and scanned for hardware changes etc. included is a little info about my system. Hope this can help you figure out whats the problem. Sometimes I've noticed that my drive fort cd/dvd player ( which is F:) will say cd then at times it will say DVD and it's totally got me confused. Thank you and God bless

I had the same problem. I finally got a knowledgeable tech at Gateway who knew that a patch had to be downloaded. I'm sorry but I don't have the link anymore but you might be able to find it in there white papers now that you know that it exists

Try this link below. This will help. Also get ASPI at link below that too can help. have you installed NERO? OR Clone DVD or UltraISO, install those anyway. http://en.kioskea.net/faq/1640-aspi-drivers-for-player-cd-dvd-burning

Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.

I know this probably doesn't qualify as a 'solution', but try using VLC to play your DVDs instead of Media Player. From what I understand, Media Player has a whole host of issues with DVD playback.

VLC is free and can be downloaded from here:

Hope this helps!

Dvd burner not detected

Sorry, but that model is not a DVD writer. It can only write and rewrite CD's. It can only read DVD's.

Here is a page with specs:

Note under DVD>Write DVD it says N/A. (Not applicable.)

Are you trying to play on a set top dvd player or in your computer ?
if it plays in your computer and not a set top box either your set top box doesn't like to play DVD-R/RW or you can change brands of media

Cannot copy files to DVD disks

First of all you should have the recording tab ON. Have you tried burning using Nero instead of dragging and dropping? This may solve the problem.

However, if you prefer to drag and drop, try setting the write speed to a slower setting, even if the dvd burner has faster write capabilities.

1. I do not think it is a hardware issue.

2. You can try replacing the IDE cable, but if you can read the contents of the disk it does not suggest a communication issue between the drive and mobo.

3. I do not think that the burning software is to blame, when you drag and drop you are actually using a windows based burning software that is installed with the operating system.

4. set up your files to burn through nero, let the software do the work.

I had the same issue with my dvd burner, although slightly different error messages, solved it by using nero instead.
