Don't go buying more stuff when you can fix the problem yourself without buying any converter. The modification required to do it is very easy and most people wont have any problem following it.

You can go to this webpage where a detailed walkthrough is given (with pictures):
http://www.byggebolig.no/index.php?topic=5572.0

Some of the post are in norwegian but the walkthrough is in english.

Good luck and happy moding :)

P.S.

For those of you that have "blowed up" a makita charger 110v on a 220v, don't throw it away!
If you are lucky you have only blowed up the fuse and the varistor, which are easy to replace, and if you follow up the walkthrough you might even go all the way a mod the charger to 220v.

I know, I have already manage to "save" a blowed up charger.

    sorry for your lose
In my mod page it says you might also need to replace the MOSFET
this is not always necessary as some users reported it works w/o replacing it. In addition, did you replace 1 or 2 capacitors ? I was experiencing the same issue and thus wrote 2 capacitors needs to be replaced.
As for the cost, please note that someone is making a profit from you, it should not cost that much ;-(
    Hope this helps

I purchased a new capacitor, varistor, fuse and a new plug and carefully soldered in the new parts. I connected a battery and with a long extension lead stood back. As soon as i flicked the switch on a tiny puff of smoke and a small pop came from the charger. I have spent hours trying to work out what went wrong. $40 in parts and it destroyed a perfectly new battery. Big disappointment.

I think it is damaged beyond repair. You are messing with very dangerous voltages and could hurt yourself. You should buy a new charger for your home voltage.

'Tis not so easy as it would require a different transformer. Praying that the stock transformer would support both 240/120 might be hoping for a bit much. Aplliances that support both voltages (such as computer power supplies) usually have a switch on them for doing so.

There are several revisions of this charger, and the physical layout is different. I've seen two sets of instructions for converting from 110 to 220 on the net for the S and T versions.
For the S version: http://www.byggebolig.no/index.php/topic,5572.msg49030.html#msg49030
For the T version: http://www.schneordesign.com/Avi/Makita/makita_mod1.htm

There are different components to change in each version, so you need to use the right instructions. In the T version, the existing Mosfet seems to be able to handle the higher voltage, but Makita uses a 900v Mosfet in its real 220v version. If you want to be cheap, you can use the existing one.

I don't know how much you destroyed by plugging it in to the wrong voltage. Very likely the varistor, fuse, 2 input capacitors and power switch are burned out, but I'd have to see it. I think the parts cost is more than a new charger would cost, so for your budget and your safety I suggest buying a new one.

Makita dc1804f charger will not charge new i-mh 1834 18v battery

I think your tryiong to charge NIMH batteries oon a charger designed for Lithium Ion batteries. With all the new style batteries such as NICAD, NIMH and LI-ION, charging becomes difficult. Most chargers pre NIMH and LI-ion, were designed for NICAD's. The best advise, match your batteries with the correct charger
