Question about Dell Dimension 5100 (D51L1) PC Desktop

1 Answer

High Hard Drive Temperature

I have a Dimension 5100 with it's original Western Digital 160gb hard drive. The literature says the operating temperature up to 30 degrees Celsius. Mine is running at 46 degrees. I've heard high temperatures shorten the life of any drive.

I've seen the hard drive coolers and fans around but since Dell has the blue "snap in" hard drive system (and I've just put in a second hard drive), does any have any advise on what fan or cooler would fit/work in my Dell. Thanks

I looked at the hard drive cooler you suggested and it looked way to big for the space I have. The hardrives are set very close (see manual) and just a small amount of space underneath the bottom. Apparently with any of these coolers a good bit of modification is necessary.

Just trying to find the easiest thing to install into Dells strange configuration. Looking at maybe using a case fan or cpu fan (if I can find one small enough!) to try mounting underneath the 2nd drive.

With the computer case open I aimed an old desk fan at the hard drives and it lowered the temps considerably. Maybe just drilling some tidy holes in the side of the case and using this simple rig is the answer? :)

Thanks for your reply. Any other ideas are welcome

    Running at 50-56C.

It didn't used to run this hot, why now, with no environmental changes to speak off and recently cleaned all the events out?

I have had the hard drive cleaned, re-installed new Operating system - Windows 7, updated software and my computer is getting slower and slower again. I did all of this becuase it was slow - any thoughts?

Slow computers are sometimes due to bad hard drives. Run a hard drive diagnostic test on your computer to make sure the hard drive isn't bad. Download this hard drive diagnostic from Western Digital: http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=612&sid=3&lang=en

Also, make sure you have enough RAM to support your growing number of installed programs. Download and run this system scanner to check if you can add more ram to your PC:

No boot device

A boot device is typically the main hard drive which contains your operating system.

There are a couple of reasons you'll get this message:

  1. You or somebody else modified the BIOS and disabled the bootable hard drive. To fix this, turn the computer on and watch for a prompt that includes the words BIOS or SETUP. It should have a key associated with it (F2 and Delete are two common options). Look for the boot up section and make sure that your primary hard drive is on the list (usually 1st or 2nd in the boot sequence.).
  2. Your hard drive is damaged or the boot sector is damaged and the BIOS can't find the boot information. In this case, I would take the computer to a local professional. Your hard drive may not be recoverable.

Can't boot up Dell 5100 Dimension, amber light flashes

When you mean the amber light, is that the blinking hard drive access light or the power light? Different cases have different colors on it. Mine has blue and green lights.

If you see the boot screen (bios) and then after it goes to boot, does it blink and hang?

This could be a simple operating system issue, hard drive or hardware/motherboard issue. If you could provide more information, that would help.

Trying to add another internal hard drive to Dell Dimension 3000

Ok... one end of the ide cable goes to the board... make sure that's plugged in correctly and has a blue connector.... second... the last drive on the other end has to be the master... the drive before that is the slave... if that setup is not working ensure that the drivers are set for master and slave... also make the power is pluigged into both drives

Trying to install hard drive on Dell Dimension 8200.

Sounds like the drive from the 4700 is a SATA drive which uses a different connector than the 40-pin IDE. I couldn't confirm it, but the 8200 may not have SATA connectors for this type of drive. Although the 4700 appears to have both SATA and IDE.

Slave drive into Dell Dimension 5100

Yes it does. It may not have an IDE cable if using SATA hard drive, but it does have a port on the motherboard to plug in the cable you take from your 4600.
