You are in luck! You do not need a driver for this camera to transfer video over the firewire port into your computer. All you need is the appropriate cable and some video editing software. The software can be as simple as Windows Movie Maker (if you are on a PC) or iMovie (if you are on a Mac). Plug your camera into the firewire cable, turn it on and put it in playback mode, then start your video software. Then there should be an option or menu entry labeled "import footage from camera" or "import" or "transfer from camera" or similar, depending on what software you are using. Good luck and happy video editing!
if you want to transfer video to your pc then no drivers are needed. you need a firewire cable (ieee 1934) to transfer dv video to you pc. usb is only for photos. you also need a firewire port on your pc. if you don't have one, then you can buy a firewire pci card.
to transfer video from your camcorder to your pc you will need a firewire cable (ieee 1394). only with this cable you will be able to transer video.
you will also need a firewire port on your pc.
if you don't have one then you can buy a firewire pci card.
no drivers are needed.
The camera has two interfaces, the firewire or ieee-1394 for transferring video to the computer and serial interface (RS232) to transfer picture from the memory card to the computer.
If you do not want to use either interfaces, you can buy cheap memory card reader (less than $10) to transfer the image from the MMC card to the PC via USB.
If you want to transfer the video to PC and does not want to use the fire wile link, then you have to buy a video capture device (cheapest is less than $30)and connect to the video-audio output.
I would recommend to use the firewire if you are intending to transfer the video.
Your logic is correct, UB2 is a little faster. However, as you have discovered, it is not recognized by the software very well. The quick solution is to buy a firewire kit at Amazon or where ever and your problems are over. The harder solution is to find software versatile enough to recognize video from the UB2 port.
