You're seeing a histogram. You can press up/down on the multiselector to cycle through the different views.

Why the screen on my Nikon Dx40 doesnt go on- so you cant see wha yo are pictring - so I should see only through the little lense.

The D40x works as SLRs have worked for half a century. You have to compose the picture through the viewfinder. The LCD screen is for menus, settings, and reviewing pictures after they've been taken. The LiveView capability allowing you to compose on the screen is a relatively new development, which Nikon introduced into their cameras with the D3 and D300, introduced years after the D40x.

Sorry if that wasn't the answer you wanted to see, but that's the way the D40x works.

There is a yellow graph on the screen when I am reviewing the pictures. How do I remove it?

Press the up or down arrow when reviewing your images and the screen will change through the various "overlay" screens until you get back to your "normal" screen (usually the one with the image and frame numbers on it). You're welcome.

Cannot take pictures thru lcd screen on d40x DSLR

The D40x is not capable of Liveview - i.e. looking at the LCD to take a picture. You are mistaken.
If you want Liveview, you need to buy the D3 or D300 cameras. The D40x is an entry-level camera.

when that information is overlayed on the playback screen, press the up or down arrow on the navigation dial until it disappears. There are a couple of different screens full of information you might see before it is completely gone.

Nikon d40x LCD screen stopped working

Have you tried the 'Menu' button? If you've turned off 'Review' in the settings menu, the screen doesn't show anything after you take a picture. If the screen doesn't come on when you push the 'Menu' button with a charged battery installed, your camera will need to be repaired.
