Question about American Standard 2770.018w.020 Cadet Whirlpool White

1 Answer

When I turn on the whirlpool, black flakes come out & into the tub water. I tried running it with chlorine bleach in the water, but that didn't help at all. The problem is getting worse as time goes on. I'm afraid it's in the hoses, but I have no idea what to do.

Go to a hot tub company, they have scale type cleaners that do this job. It does require draining a few times, but it is worth it.

When washing towels black mould marks are seen on the towels. Towels are also getting holes.

What you probably have is a build-up of scrud in the machine as a result of an interaction between the fabric softener and the detergent. This flakes off and marks the clothing.
Buy a commercially available cleaner for your machine for this purpose of do one or two cycles using a bottle of white vinegar in the tub without detergent. Clean the machine out doing another cycle using baking soda directly in the drum. Repeat this process if there are still any indications of scrud.
Take care that you use the correct amount of detergent in your machine according to load and water level and do a cleaning run about every 25 wash cycles to clear away any excess detergent that was not caught by the rinse.
If your washing is getting holed, it could be because of incorrect use of chlorine bleach being poured directly onto clothing, unfastened buckles and zippers in the wash, ribs and tears and broken threads in the materials and overloading the washer. Degradation of the fabrics could also be a contributing factor.

Are they white flakes? Sounds like you have lime deposits turning loose in the plumbing.

Was the unit purchased and installed new? Maybe the privious owner had a hard water problem.

In either case, you may have to invest in a water softener.

I have an Eljer jet bathtub with a smell to the water when we bat

What you smell is algae forming in the pipes. If you have small black particles in the tub when running the jets, it is algae. Fill the tub with hot water, add 2 teaspoons of cascade dish soap and 1/2 cup bleach. run the tub for 15 minutes and drain. fill tub with cold water, run for 15 minutes and drain, tub is now ready to use. repeat as necessary.

Two person jacuzzi that hasn;t been used for several years. Iron

You are on the right track. Be sure and chlorinate and run the jets at the same time I would let it set for at least a couple of hours running the jet intermittantly and then drain and repeat.
Sound like you have Iron Bacteria. You may want ot contact a water profeessional who can recommend ways of getting rid of the iron.
Properly Chlorinating your well would be a good first step.
