Question about HP Pavilion dv1000 Notebook

1 Answer

DV100 Display My display goes black, but when I tap the lid actuator switch, it comes back on. Sometimes for a second or two; sometimes for an hour or two. I can get it to go off and on, off and on by tapping the switch.. It seems to be in that switch, which I understand in on the mother board. . I can see the display if I shine a bright light on it. My computer isn't under warranty.. Can I just disable the switch?

Hi questpilot,
what you're saying it can be 3 possible case
1.its the backlight that have problem and I give it 90% to your problem. The behavior of spoil back light sometime you can use and sometime you can't if you tab the switch that mean you power off the light and after that you power on it again so this will work for 1-2 second
2.Bad inverter or bad chip on that inverter this always happen but like this case sometime after switch, you can use for nearly a week or two. so I give it only 40% for your case.
3.Its the lid actuator but you already push it up and down already and still the same.and also when you push it down and up the light turn on...so I think this is working fine.

Screen

There is a switch that controls the on/off of display when the lid is opened or closed. Sometimes it's located near the hinges. Perhaps it's been damaged, loose, dirty, etc. Unplug, remove battery, plug in, reboot.

I have lenovo g550...my screen flickers in every 5minutes...

Failing Inverter An inverter, typically found inside a laptop computer, consists of a small board, which has impregnated electronic circuits stamped on it. Inverters look like thin boards about the of two sticks of chewing gum. The inverter and its bulb control the intensity of the liquid crystal display, which lights the screen monitor. The computer can control the output voltage of the inverter and either lighten or darken the screen. A special type of inverter can adjust the brightness of the screen by using an internal sensor to judge the room brightness, and then adjust the screen accordingly. Failing inverters give off some specific warning signs, which can be recognized by observing different screen characteristics.

Short Intermittent Display Upon turning on the laptop, the screen flashes on in the normal mode for a short period and then blinks to black. A very faint image appears in a dark background, which will be very hard to see almost invisible. After shutting off the laptop and restarting, the same mode occurs, where the screen appears normal for a few seconds then fades to black. This condition points to a failed inverter. To confirm this, plug in an operational external monitor; if the external monitor functions, the inverter has failed. b> Total Blackout with Ghost image b> The laptop turns on, as indicated by the power supply button, but the screen comes up black. The screen comes up black after restart. You might be able to detect a very dim or ghost-like image on the monitor. When you plug in a known functioning external monitor, the external monitor operates normally. This mode of display indicates a failed inverter. b> Long Term Periodic Operation b> With this failure mode, the laptop screen illuminates normally upon start-up and remains that way after several minutes, hours or even days, until it goes very dark again. Brightness controls or restoration attempts do not work. Most often, the screen will function normally with a computer restart, but will eventually return to black. Faint ghost images might appear, as seen in the total blackout mode. b> Dark With Color Variation b> Upon computer start-up, the monitor shows black or dark gray, accompanied by very faint images. The screen might have an intermittent color change, or remain on with a non-standard color variation, like pink or red. b> Auto Control Switch b> If the screen appears black, with no faint or ghost images, look for the lid switch near the back hinge. The switch, when depressed with a closed lid, shuts off the computer and monitor functions. Sometimes the switch becomes stuck in the closed position, disallowing the computer and monitor to turn on when opened. Pushing the switch manually several times can often free it up. If the switch tab has broken or jammed inside the case, it needs replacing. b> Loose Connection In this mode, the display looks normal upon start-up, but tapping the side case of the computer turns the screen black. More tapping results in the screen functioning normally then cutting out again. This condition points to a loose wire connection from the inverter to the LCD backlight lamp, or the video cable. The connectors can be accessed by removing the monitor bezel screws and pulling the plastic retainer off. Both connectors can be cleaned and refitted.

if you tap the back of screen and it goes on and off chances are its loose ribbon cable ,

Screen goes black

. if The screen flickers then turns dark, when you move it or tap it lightly on the sides, it may be due to Failed cable at the back of the screen or LCD
In some cases you might hear a buzzing noise coming from the area where the inverter board is located, it’s on the bottom part of the screen Troubleshooting: If the screen is black, look for the “lid closed” switch and try pushing it a few times. It’s usually a small switch near the hinges that is pressed when the lid(the screen) is closed. Sometimes these switches get stuck in the “lid closed” position that results in black screen(no backlight) or non-starting laptop. Also some laptops have a magnetic switch (newer Dells, most Macs, etc.) that doesn’t get stuck.
The most common failures are (in this order): inverter, “lid closed” switch, cable, LCD, backlight.
the display assembly.so open the display assembly check the cable fix it tightly and again if no improvement change the inverter PCB

Screen goes black repeatedly

It appears the lid switch is sticking internally.
Try this: 1 drop of WD40 on the edges of the plunger button itself. If that doesn't work. You may need to replace the lid switch itself. Not much of a technical challenge, but a good tech should be able to do it in an hour. Common switch design from many laptops.

If possible; ask them not to unseat the Video Card if they don't have to, this model is prone to poor contacts on the video card, then the unit may never come on again, or have lines in the display. (same as HP zt3000)

If you have poor contact, you will need some contact lubricant/enhancer (@Radio Shack).

Used to work well for TV tuners in the old days, now good for poor motherboard/daughterboard connectors.

LCD screen goes blank and computer stops functioning

This must be a loose connection on the lcd behind the lid or in the hinge, I would not atempt a repair, laptops are a nightmare, take to a specialist repairer.
