I was watching a film on mine and it paused and I hade to hold in the power button to shut it off.
When I restarted it I get that error message too.
I did the same as everyone else with no luck, so I left it on thinking that maybe running the battery down and charging it again might help but no luck.
I left it for a week then decided to have another go at fixing it.
I removed the battery and used the reset button to set it to factory defaults.
I powered it up and got the error message and tried the USB cable again (Can't remember for sure if it was on or off when I connected it) and I got the option of connecting to my PC and copying a system update to it.
I downloaded the update and copied it to the harddrive and it then updated itself and restarted.
It booted up ok but when I restarted it I get the error message again.
I redid the first bit again and using the XP Disc Management I removed the partition, then redone it.
I restarted the 604 and formatted the harddrive and copied the update and it updated and restarted again.
The pointer needs to be calabrated again on it to work but it's back to normal now and working great.
I set everything up and copied all the folders into a folder on my PC so if it happens again I just need to fix the harddrive and copy the files over.

Also had the Code 2 error. Had a look at the harddisk and noticed the ribboncable in the pcb side was not completely in the socket on one side. Reconnected and started up normal.
Beware, the screws are very small, you need a very small (watchmaker) screwdrive or , as I did as my smallest screwdriver was still too big, a knive. As mentioned before, putting it back together can be fiddly but you should check this first before sending it for repairs.
If you feel uncomfortable to take it part, find someone to do it for you.
Don't loose the screws!

Recovery (code 104)

From Archos' support website FAQ:

When I switch on my Archos device, the following message is displayed: "Would you like to recover your system?" What does it mean and what should I do?

You are on the recovery mode screen. It means that your hard drive has been damaged and must be repaired or formatted.
With this system recovery mode, you will have to select between "Repair Disk" and "Format Disk".
Start by selecting "Repair Disk" and follow the instructions displayed on the screen. See the full PDF manual (available on the Archos web site) on how to use the Repair and Format options.

If repairing the disk did not work, try formatting the disk by selecting "Format Disk". Note that the formatting will erase all data.

If you still cannot restart your Archos after trying a system recovery, you should contact Archos technical support.

Windows XP Repairing

XP is a windows based operating system. XP is client OS which file format is Fat32 and NTFS. Some time for user fault, unauthorised operation, improper shutdown, viruses or any other cause may corrupt this file system and it may crash your windows also. Formatting and reloading of windows can solve your problem easily. But maybe there formatting is not possible for important data or for product key. So there repair of OS is only way to recover.

I have facing almost the same problem once. There customer have a confidential file in his system's desktop. Desktop belongs in C: drive where the OS resides. First I tried to recover the data but nothing is possible there. Then I started to repair the Widows. I insert the XP CD in DVD-Rom drive boot from it. Start the windows setup after loading files it ask for a repair (R key) I have ignore it by pressing Enter then the license agreement screen appeared. Then the OS instruct to press F8 to agree with the license and continue setup. After pressing F8 it will find the previous version of OS, if setup found any previous version then it will give you option to repair the OS again. But that day I don't get this option. It shows total disk space of C: drive have remain free space. So that there was not any file to recover the OS.

Then I go to boot the system again but formatting is not possible so after loading files at the first while the first repairing option appeared I have accept this repairing option. This option is from dos repairing option. After pressing "R" while appear the dos screen. Then press Enter to continue. Then I run the command "chkdsk" in C: drive to check the disk. After complete the disk checking and fixing the error I reboot the system again. After that I have Boot the system and after completing the whole process I choose the second repairing option. Then I got the previous version of OS and start to repair the previous OS. It now just loads the file and get started XP after booting. I got success to repair the OS and recover the data.
So it is a secure and easy process of recovery.

HOW TO REPAIR MISSING OR DAMAGE FILES

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS APPLY TO BOTH LAPTOP AND DESKTOP COMPUTERS.

Hi there if your computer has missing files or a file is corrupt and you need to repair the damage file, you can do this by using a recovery disk for the computer if you have one. If you do not have a recovery disk for the computer you can use the operating system disk to repair it, please follow these steps: insert the operating system disk into the CD/DVD drive, restart the computer, press F12 and choose boot from CD save and exit. While the computer is loading it will ask you to press any key to boot from CD, so you will press any key, a blue screen will appear while its loading, when it get to the first set of options you will press enter to continue. when it get to the second set of options it will ask you to install the operating system or repair it, choose repair and follow the steps from there, once you choose repair, the computer will go through different stages. The next step is to enter the keys for the operating system the computer will continue until it finish the repairs and this should solve the problem of missing files. But you should backup your files before doing this even though no files should be lost but its better to backup just in case something goes wrong. Backing up the file is always an important part of having a computer, you should also create a recovery CD and this can be done during the process of backing up your computer files. The back up files should be store on one or more DVDs or other storage device and this along with the recovery CD should be store in a safe and dry place. The purpose of the recovery CD is to repair damage or missing files on the computer and each computer require its own back up and recovery disk to repair the problem.
