I believe that the part that is clicking, it is black and it has three big red wires coming out of it, that look like spark plug wires

Is it worth getting someone to fix it or should I get rid of the tv?

  • stevengrandi Sep 14, 2010

Should I still replace the tube?

  • stevengrandi Sep 14, 2010

Is it possible for the flyback transformer to only affect one color like that? The tv was also out in the rain for one day haha

Hi.

Either the blue CRT lamp, or the ballast board powering the blue lamp must be replaced. Before replacement the part must be tested reading high voltage out from flyback transformer for blue CRT. For safety reasons the test must be done by a trained person.
If I was in your shoes I would hope the problem being the flyback. CRT for Hitachi projectors are quite expensive. The flyback can be repaired by a technician working at component level. Part is about $40, but it may be out of stock.

Here parts:

The clicks are discharges that the high tension are causing on the blue crt because the tube itself is defective and must be replaced The flicker is caused by the spark when it occurs the voltage on the tube drops and that lowers its luminosity.
As a last hope take out the back cover, access the tube, try to locate the spark and see if you can shift some pieces to stop it from happening.

That is the flyback transformer, and those wires are channelling the very high tension generated in it to the tubes. This is a major malfunction, the transformer is shorted and must be replaced. Under no circumstances you should do the replacement yourself - leave it to a pro, the voltage can easily kill you.

A flyback transformer will cost you around $100. Add to that about $100 for the repairman. If nothing else is damaged and the image was good before that then yes, it might be worth keeping it. But it's an old tv and it's starting to break apart at the seams so, if you have the money, then the only reasonable solution is to just get rid of it and get a new one, it will be cheaper in the long run.

No problems with the tube, no reason to replace it.

  • stevengrandi Sep 14, 2010

Thanks alot for your help! I will call someone tomorrow to see if they can change it out for me

  • Azrael SRL Sep 15, 2010

Yes, since it might have just a single high tension wire defective, not all 3.

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, greenish, or blueish or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.
You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Hitachi 42 in tv approx. 5 yr old. from center to left of tv is out of focus. have tried the magic focus, does not help . there is a green image next to the original image.

Convergence output ICs starting to fail and may also have a resistor or two that changed value. Would be best to hire expierienced tech as there are many necessary adjustments after changing parts.

Blue lamp is not in focus

Try adjusting the convergence. If it won't move see below- (or hitting Magic Focus for some Hitachi’s)

This sounds like convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually charge between $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

it sounds like your blue convergence ic is getting weak you need to replace the ic's STK392-110 and you should replace both because when 1 is bad the other will go real soon. They are inexspensive at the sight I posted and you will also get free tech online support if you purchase them there.

TV automatically turns magic focus mode on when the power button is pressed on the remote and even manually.

I have this problem starting today. Unfortunately, others who have fixed it have done the following.

* Unplug TV for hours and it worked

* Buying manual switch to the outlet or surge protector and switch power off that way.

It appears that I'm in no mood to spend hundreds to get this fixed for hundreds of dollars and just going the Radio Shack route of buying a switch which would probably be more of savings. But needless to say, I hope that is the only problem I have.
