Problem with some keys of keyboard

I have LG IBM R40 bought in 2004. Presently I am facing a Problem with some keys of keyboard. As there is no proper devoted service center for LG IBM after the breakup of LGIBM, I am finding difficultly in getting proper assistance. Some forum says try installing drivers but I was unable to follow so I gave laptop to a TG service Center for confirming if keyboard is real problem or not, Now they say, they want to install XP but my CD drive is not working. They ask me to change the CD drive(which I hardly use!). I am just confused if I should really change Combo CD drive, the keyboard or what to do? I already changed my Hard Dive 2 years back and also upgrade RAM to 512MB.

1)What can be way to solve the problem?
2)Whether it is worth to change the parts?
OR
should I try to buy new one?

1. Sourcing a keyboard is easy, check EBay. Fitting it is easy, two or three screws from underneath and a single connector takes care of that. I just did one, and the keyboard cost me 20 pounds.

2. If you don't use the CD / dvd drive, then consider purchasing / loaning an external cd / dvd drive, which you then connect via USB. You can then reload Windows from this new device, and it will serve any new computers you may have in the future. Expect to pay 20 to 30 pounds from any high-street retailer.

To boot from this device (which you would want to do in order to load Windows from it), you will need to access the BIOS, and change the 'boot order'. So you interrupt normal boot, by pressing F1 (could be different o your comp), and make the USB cd / dvd the first device in the boot list.

Good luck.

Bios battery location

On the R40, you will need to remove two things to get to the BIOS battery: 1) the regular battery, 2) the Keyboard. The BIOS battery is located just underneath the keyboard. In order to remove the keyboard you have to remove two screws from the bottom of the notebook (each will have a little picture of a keyboard and arrow next to it). Pop the keyboard up gently and the BIOS battery is just above the mouse buttons.

Check out the service manual for more details (pages 68, 77, 85).

I popped the key cover off an IBM thinkpad. How do I replace it?

The white hinge assembly likely has two parts to it that make it form a spring in the form of a letter X. You should see small catches for the feet of these two parts on the keyboard -- they will fit properly only one way. Put that back on. Then you can snap the key itself back on and it will be "springy" just like the others.
