It's hard to get parts for cameras, and you often have to get them from the manufacturer, if you can. What some people do is buy an "as is" camera on Ebay, with the good parts that you need, and then swap them out with the one you're fixing. To change the motor, you will have to disassemble the camera completely to get to it, but it can be done with patience.
Here is a link to a couple of them on Ebay:

Good luck, hope this helps, and thanks for using FixYa.

Canon PowerShot S2 IS camera showing code E18

Hello there,
The E18 error is related to the LENS not able to retract fully. If it is still under warranty, I would advise you bring it to the nearest service center. This is to avoid further damages. Otherwise, you can try a few things below.
There are a couple of things you can do.
1. Turn it on and then off. Spray canned air around the lens.
If trick 1 will not work out, try this.
2. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Turn on the camera and then give it a couple of firm whacks on the side. Make sure nothing is blocking the lens and wait for it to fully retract.
Let me know how it goes.

Cannon PowerShot S2 IS lens is stuck

I have the exact same problem, took it completely apart removed the zoom motor, physically turned the zoom gear and retracted the lens, reinstalled the motor, put it all back together, and found that I had the same problem and the lens wouldn't move out, so im pretty certain that the motor is bad, as the lens moves smoothly once the motor is not attached to it... looking for a replacement motor as i type...

Canon powershot s2 15 shutter won't open

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see the following for further info and a simple fix that may help:

I have a Canon Powershot S2 IS which has worked great till recently it locks down for no apparent reason. I hear a series of beeps and see E18 in the bottom at left of screen. If the zoom is out, it...

Taken from a canon forum:

Canon E18 error happens when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend. The camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a little E18 in the lower-left corner. The lens gets stuck in the extended position, and refuses to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off.

Apparently, people who posted about this incident on forums say they had to send the camera for repair and that Canon has horrible customer support and response time.

-Basically what it came down to is if it's under warranty, get it replaced. If not, try using compressed air to blow out dirt and dust from the lens and all reachable components.

Or just gently push the lens back.

It is a Canon design malfunction and has happened on plenty of cameras.

My Canon 40D digital SLR loves to give me Error 5, and my flash wont pop up. It's just an unfortunate side affect of owning a Canon.

Canon Powershot S2 IS Disassemly guide?

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here are some things that you can do to try to correct it without disassembly. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

My Canon Power Shot S2 1S will not take pictures because the lens will not go back in or out. The screen is black unless I review recent pictures

Do you get an E18 error? If so, then the lens motor is bad, or you have contamination in the gears (sand, dirt, etc), or mechanical failure from dropping the camera. This will require repair by Canon or other camera repair services.

Camera - Canon Powershot S2 IS (5.0)

This is caused by a bad lens motor, contamination in the transmission, or mechanical damage from dropping. The only fix for this is to have it serviced by Canon or other camera repair facility.

Canon S2 IS

The lens needs a professional camera repair service.

The probability is high that the ultrasonc lens motor or th lens internal gears are damaged, and needs replacement.

Lens not moving

Send to the service center, this is probably related to the lenses drive train step motor or the step motor position sensor. If it does not work, buy a S3. Good luck.
