Download the drivers or the full software from HP: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=1153481& select whether you have the 32 or 64 bit version of Vista. Make sure the unit is on. Try a new cable and make sure the port is working. If you use a print server or USB hub, try a direct connection.
If you are using the USB cable, uninstall a generic driver if you connected the printer to the computer before loading the HP software.
