Question about Roper Kitchen Ranges

2 Answers

I put a load of clothes, nothing large or overbearing, in the dryer yesterday and the dryer started just like normal. when i went back to the laundry room, about 45 minutes later, the dryer was making some horrible grinding/squealing noise and i could tell the drum was not turning. i turned off the dryer and opened the door and the inside of the drum was not even hot. i noticed that the dial for the dryer timer had barely moved towards off, compared to what it normally does. now, when i try to start the dryer, it won't even give me a click, let alone start. help please!!!!!

pulled the back off the dryer and the belt is still attached/not flopping around from what i can see. unfortunately can't see underneath drum. looked around drum and there is no obstruction that i can see. what now?

i have pulled the back off of the dryer and can see the belt. it appears to be in tact and attached/not flopping around, although, i cannot see below the bottom of the drum, without removing the drum. i have looked around the top and sides of the drum and there is no blockage or obstruction. what now?

i have followed previous advice and opened up the back of the dryer. can see part of the belt and it appears to be where it should be and from what i can see around the drum, there are no obstructions. i am at a loss. please tell me what now?

Can you hear a sound, it will be real faint. The electric motor that turns the drum may have broke.

Does the drum turn freely? You should be able to turn the drum. When you turn the drum does it feel like it is binding?

  • jennireed105 Sep 15, 2010

i have not tried to turn it yet. i can check it tonight and get back to you. i am not near the dryer right now. i will let you know this evening. thanks!

I am sorry that I didn't get back to you faster. If the drum is hard to turn then you may have burnt up the electric motor that turns the drum. I will try to get back with you faster the next time.

The squealing noise was the belt slipping on the engine wheel - the movement of the drum is blocked by something. It won't give you a sign of life because the controller has been damaged by the malfunction and its safety is preventing it from starting until the problem is fixed.
You need to dismantle the drier completely to find out what is blocking the movement of the drum and if you can fix it. At least the belt will have to be replaced.

Take out the belt and try to turn the drum by hand - if it doesn't spin then find out why.

So the drum can be turned by hand without a problem and when you do that you don't hear any funny noises. That means that the problem is either in the motor or the programmer.
You don't hear even a click because the programmer doesn't receive power - follow the wires from the wall socket to the programmer and test them for continuity. If the wires are intact and the power reaches the programmer but the engine isn't powered then it' s defective and must be replaced. A new one can be obtained directly from the dealer. But, with a bit of luck, you can find it online at a lower price.

Refitting it is a delicate job that requires at least basic experience - if you don't have it then ask a friend who has done that before for a helping hand.

I think a sensor is being faulty when you load and go to use the unit. Also might want someone to check out the timer on the unit just in case it is going out on you.
