Hi there, no you don't need an HD tv to use a playstation 3. You can use a standard AV cable that has 3 connectors that go to your tv, a red, white and yellow connector. This is for use on standard tv's. As long as you have these inputs into your TV then you can use it.
Obviously the advantages of HD are that graphics are much more vivid and watching blu rays in true high definition is always a bonus.

If you attached your PS3 to an HDMI capable TV it asks you if you want to switch to HD Mode.
However, once you attach it back to a regular TV you get no picture.
Follow these steps to resolve:
1. Turn off the PS3 so it only shows a red light. You can flick the power switch in the back then back on again.
2. With your PS3 connected to the TV and the TV on, press and hold the power button.
3. Hold the power button until the screen "flickers" and then immediately release.
4. Wait a few seconds and the PS3 logo should appear.
