Question about IBM Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My IBM ThinkPad requires me to change my password on occassion. I forgot my password, and as a result, have not been able to log on to my computer. At the suggestion of a friend who works with computers, I pressed the F8 button a few times immediately after starting the computer, but that did not do anything. I also tried to log in as "Administrator" instead of on the normal desktop. That didn't work either because I still didn't know the password. Please let me know what I can do so that I can begin logging on again. My CDRom drive doesn't work (so I can't use ceratin software to reset my password), but I heard from my friend that a jumpdrive might work. Thank you.

I forgot my password to log on to my account. I have an IBM thinkpad 240. It's at least 5 years old. Is there anyway to restore the factory settings.

I imagine you have Windows XP. If so, try this:
Start the computer in safe mode.
Choose the Administrator account. If your computer is like 90% of the computers I've seen, no one has password-protected this account.
Once in, go to the control panel and choose Users; From there, you can change your password to one you remember.
Next time don't forget it.

IBM R52 Laptop locked after removing and re-putting CMOS battery

This is an excerpt form the service manual for this exact model of notebooks:

If you forgot your power-on password, you must take your computer to a Lenovo authorized servicer or a marketing representative to have the password canceled. If you forgot your hard disk password, Lenovo authorized servicer can not reset your password or recover data from the hard disk. You must take your computer to a Lenovo authorized servicer or a marketing representative to have the hard disk drive replaced. Proof of purchase is required, and a fee will be charged for parts and service. If you forgot your supervisor password, Lenovo can not reset your password. You must take your computer to a Lenovo authorized servicer or a marketing representative to have the system board replaced. Proof of purchase is required, and a fee will be charged for parts and service.

Hope this will answer your question.

Is this a BIOS password? If so, read below...

Which is a problem, to say the least.

If it's a Windows password, you can only reset the password by logging in with the Administrator account. This is more problematical with Vista because then Vista might lock out some files after the reset. Good luck.

Forgot startup password

For the Windows password you will need to reformat your hard drive. If that would not be done or if there is another way of removing the password without removing and reinstalling the operating system or of using your laptop by working around, windows password does not make sense at all. Hope this helps. Thank you.

Power-on password problem!

The power on password is stored on an EEPROM chip and removing the BIOS/CMOS battery won't help.
You need to read the EEPROM chip to get the password.
