Question about Amana MVH140 Microwave Oven

Fire help...need a new part or new microwave?

Okay, i need help badly. i was using my convection oven to cook a pizza and thought i set the kitchen timer on my Amana MVH140E microwave, but like a dummy actually made it cook with nothing but a plastic food cover (microwave safe, but apparently not if there's nothing in there), and started a fire. i cleaned the microwave out, etc. however, the microwave shut down and i can't get it back on. so i'm figuring i damaged something..any ideas what, and can i get a part for it or do i need to buy a whole new one?

There is a flame sensor whose job it is to cut power if there is a fire. It has probably blown.

It may be called a thermostat, thermal cutout, or thermal fuse. It will look something like the drawings below. (The service info I have on this model is spotty).

But generally, there is one on the floor of the chassis behind the control panel. It should read open on a continuity test.

There will normally be two others, and they will read closed (also called shorted or zero ohms). One is on or near the magnetron and the other is along the top of the cooking cavity.

If you or someone you know wants to look into this, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

NOTE: There may also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

How to bake pizza in rival micro wave .??how to set it?

Unless the pizza was specifically packaged for microwave use, pizza cooking in a microwave is usually a bad idea. They don't turn out well. Although microwaves are referred to as "ovens", they really don't bake things, they boil them by heating the moisture in the product. Thus, pizza crust will not rise and get crispy unless the pizza was pre-made to be microwave reheated. Those pizzas will give instructions on how to microwave them.

I would check the cooking instructions on the side of the pizzas packaging. If microwave cooking is not listed I would not recommend cooking it in a microwave as this could make the food unsafe to eat.

But if you're short of an oven I have found a guide on barbecuing a pizza:

My Dacor DCM24 microwave/convection oven is brand new and won't pop popcorn--old or new, large or small bag, with twice as much time as is on the bag, power on high. Doesn't work with the popcorn button...

Are you cooking it this way, as shown in the owner's manual?

"Use an overturned 9 or 10 inch oven proof glass pie plate on top of the
turntable when popping bagged microwave popcorn.
"

You can also use a paper plate in a pinch, but as always, never leave a microwave unattended while it's cooking, since some paper products can have impurities which will allow overheating and possibly fire.

This is a convection oven, so it has a metal turntable tray.

Microwaves cannot penetrate the metal from below like it would on a standard microwave's glass tray, allowing for even heating.

If you've lost your owner's manual, you can get it here.

That particular skillet is just too heavy a load for the turntable system to handle.

I would suggest a lighter skillet or a different container, otherwise, the motor or shaft or both will be damaged.

It is of course perfectly okay to put metal in a microwave (after all, that's what they're made of!) but you just have to do it only according to the instructions in the owner's manual.

And as you know, metal in convection mode poses no problem at all.

You just need to use a lighter or different container.

I've just bought a microwave/grill/convection oven combi but the manal isnt very comprehensive. i'm not sure what i can use to cook in with the convection oven function. can i use metal in there? eg. can...

Yes.

In convection mode, you can use anything that's oven safe. Anything you would use in a regular baking oven in other words.

There's a very interesting and helpful article on convection cooking here, and you can find more tips here.
