Optiplex gx820 can i connect 300 watt power supply

You listed GX820 and GX260.

I am assuming you meant the GX260.

There are three varieties of the Gx260.

1) The SFF (Small Form Factor) power supplies can be replaced, but I know of no upgrades for these.

2) For the SDT (Small Desk Top), you can get up to a 270 (best I have seen).

Example of where to get one.

For the Mini Tower, here is an example of a 400W replacement. There may be others for this model.

I have a GX280 Mini Tower and recently upgraded my PSU to one very similar to the one above.

HOW MUCH AGP CAN SUPPORTED BY DELL OPTIPLEX GX260

As much as you can fit in a agp 4x card. If you have the flat desktop or the skinny tower you need 5to get a low profile card, a little hard to find for a desktop. Laptops mainly use them. Try www.tigerdirect.com see what they have in agp 4x low profile or regular size if you have the mini-tower(fatter).

I have windows 7 on my opitplex gx260 and want to upgrade the grafic card recomendations

The Optiplex GX260 is limited in it's graphics card upgrading, due to,

1) The limited size inside the computer case, if the Optiplex GX260 is a Small Form Factor, (SFF), or Small Desktop computer.
The Small Mini-Tower may also be fairly limited because of size constraints.

SFF is,
3.57 inches Tall (9.0cm)
12.54 inches Wide (31.9cm)
13.93 inches Long (35.4cm)

Small Desktop,
4.2 inches Tall (10.6cm)
15.3 inches Wide (38.9cm)
17 inches Long (43.2cm)

Small Mini-Tower,
16.7 inches Tall (42.5 cm)
7.1 inches Wide (18.1cm)
17.6 inches Long (44.7cm)

2) Uses AGP graphics cards.
However will use either 4X or 8X AGP graphics cards.
(AGP 8X being the better technology)

3) Power Supply
It's a 200 Watt supply, probably with a 10 Amp, 12 Volt power rail.
With one of the more powerful AGP 8X graphics cards out there, you probably will be alright, but the age of the power supply is what concerns me.

With the added load of an AGP 8X graphics card, it could cause the power supply to fail. Perhaps not right away, but probably right in the middle of a killer game.

The motherboard chipset is an Intel 845G.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Pentium_4_Chipsets

The motherboard chipset is the Northbridge, and Southbridge chipset.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Motherboard_diagram.svg

(CPU stands for Central Processing Unit, or Microprocessor, or Processor)

When dealing with Integrated Graphics such as is on your motherboard now, the Southbridge chip handles it.
(Chip, and Chipset are slang terms for I.C., or Integrated Circuit)

The Northbridge chip on the Optiplex GX260 is an Intel 845G. The Southbridge chip is an Intel ICH4.

Just about any AGP 8X graphics card, will S-M-O-K-E the integrated graphics you have now.

Also Integrated Graphics has to use some of the System Resources.
Some of the Processor, and Ram Memory resources.
With a dedicated graphics card, it has it's own Processor, and Ram Memory.
(GPU - Graphics Processing Unit, and graphics ram memory)

This frees up the System Resources for the computer, and allows better graphics.

The SFF, and Small Desktop GX260 will require using a half-height graphics card. Not as tall as a normal graphics card.

The Small Mini-Tower may also. The computer case size is measured at the Outside edges. This doesn't give you an accurate measurement, of Inside the computer case.

For this type of GX260, you will have to physically measure from the AGP graphics expansion slot, (The small black slot above the white PCI slots, and below the Processor socket), to the inside edge of the computer case.

Determine whether the graphics card has to be half-height, or full height.

In an added comment I will list three AGP 8X graphics cards examples.
One in a half-height configuration, two in a full height configuration.

I need help installing a cd drive in an Antec Sonata III 500 computer case. How do I do it?

Unplug the power from the computer. Open the case cover. Carefully remove the placeholder on the front of the case where you wish to install the CD drive. Make sure you have the proper ribbon cable for the type of drive you are installing and that you know where to plug it into the motherboard (consult your motherboard manual).

Use the screws provided to secure the drive to the chassis rails (make face of drive flush with front of case). Attach an available power supply connector to the new CD drive. Close the cover.

Trying to instal a new HD in a Dell Optiplex GX260 Mini tower and the it wil llet me load the OS on but when it goes to reboot to start the setup it says no HD found.

You need to be sure that your computer is starting from the CD, not the hard drive.

On boot you should have the option to choose a start up. Try F12, or F2. Then choose your CD/DVD device.

You should be able to run the install from there. If not, you'll have to change the start up device in the BIOS, which is a whole other conversation.

OptiPlex GX270 mini tower

Remove the 256mb memory and insert the 512mb memory in slot1 and see whether it works. Please note that the memory needs to be in pairs.

I think the GX260 is mini tower has two different moles
1) PC3200 compatible with memory - 184 Pin DDR3200 400MHz

2) PC2700 compatible with memory -184 Pin DDR2700 333MHz

Please enter the service tag on dell.com and find the manual and the right memory for your PC

All the best!

Installing a sound card into my Optiplex GX260

Hi

OptiPlex GX260 can be Small Form-Factor, Small Desktop or Small Mini-Tower. Compatibility with PCline 5.1 PCI depends on the profile of the PCI Card and the Profile of your OptiPlex.

GX260 Small Form-Factor is compatible with Low-Profile PCI Cards only. GX260 Small Desktop and Small Mini-Tower are compatible with standard PCI Cards. (Small Mini-Tower however uses a PCI Cage).

Check OptiPlex GX260 Systems User's Guide - http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx260/en/ug/index.htm
From here you visualize the 3 form factors. Also there is info and steps to install PCI cards.

NB:
1. Generally, upmarket PCI cards are standard height. Some manufactures supply a metal piece to allow it to be used in Low-Profile or Standard Profile.
2. Driver software needs to be installed after the hardware is installed.
