Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

When router is connected I get progressively slower PC internet connections with freezes up and download problems

Did all that...When connected only to cable internet, there are no problems. Once hooked back through the router it will start to have intermittent stops of the internet on the PC. As time goes on they get more and more frequent. Linksys tech support says they can help with the fix, but wants me to pay them for it. I bought the router 7 months ago and just hooked up, but they say it is out of warrant.

This makes me think that a kind of virus is trying to use your Internet connection. Update your anti-virus program and run a full scan.

Sorry had to leave for work. I tried the reset and no help. When I completely unhook the router and turn it off, then later hook it back up, it will run fine for a short time and then progressively slow my PC's internet connection.

Log in the router's settings page - wireless section - channel & ssid and change the channel from auto to manual. Choose a channel from the 13 provided. I'm suspect of one wireless device (e.g.wireless phone e.t.c.) that conflicts at this band.

I'm not sure how to do what your suggesting. I do have a cell phone; iphone to be exact, and that is the main reason I set up the wi-fi. I don't have decent 3G service here. I was thinking of just getting rid of this router and getting a new one. Maybe a N. What's your thoughts on a decent one that isn't too expensive.

CONNECT WITH THE CABLE at your router. You have to open a browser window (Internet Explore for example) typehttp://192.168.1.1 (without www.) and you will get at a window with Linksys logo asking for user (type admin) and pass (type admin). At the new window locate the "Basic wireless settings" tab and click on it. Change the "wireless channel" at any new setting. Click on "save". When you disconnect from the cable your laptop will automatically locate the new channel and get the wi-fi. Check the results. Maybe you have to try at another channel with the same procedure.

Michael, are you running wired, or wireless connection? With a wireless connection, if other people are accessing the same router, it allocates a percentage of the bandwidth to each device. For example; If your max speed is 100mbps, and you have your smart phone accessing the router, than about 1/2 of the internet is going to the phone connection, and the rest to your system. The more devices attached to the router, the slower it will become. If you are having problems like this and running it "Hard wired" then the issue could be a bad connection between your router and the system. Try swapping out the cat5 line with a new one. These have become really inexpensive now, and I would suggest have 2 or 3 for backups.

My series keeps cutting out little circle looks like it is looking for wifi and it is connected

It could be a problem with your internet connection; wireless connection is always slower than ethernet. Try moving to another part of the house (closer to your wireless router) or testing the internet speed. You can test your speed at www.speedtest.net

Can anyone tell me why the videos i watch on youtube keep stopping and going and how i can fix that ?

Usually it's due to internet traffic and download speeds of your connection. Pause the video and let the entire video download before watching.

Download speed slows when router is on line.

If the router is offline then your not downloading anything, most down loads start fast then fall to a level your pc can handle, aka your connection speed.

Good Signal,Good Mbps, Slow Internet Connection?

1. Try to use a different wireless adapter on all available USB ports, if the problem remains then
2. turn off your PC unplug the power cord from the power socket, short the two legs of the power cable then leave it for 5min, then plug it into the power socket again and turn on the PC.

if this didnt work then you have a hardware problem with the USB ports.

let me know how it works out.

Weak connection

HI,
As you have changed the router still the connection speed is slow, in this case it's better to contact your ISP get the line tested or a proper signal strength.
Also conduct a speedtest by going to the website internetfrog.com....indications are towards a line fault.

Internet

  1. Look at the network connection icon wheter its blinking or not during refreshing the web page.
  2. If it does not blink check connection between router and pc
  3. check Netgear internet settings.
  4. Check if there is any block settings in the router.

Window Vista has lots of updates, and it's bit defender is working everyday to check your pc. This is really slowing your programs including Internet Explorer.

To test if your Windows is haveing problems or not, you might download a linux live CD such as PClinuxOS or Knoppix to test the connection.

If you can browse the internet no problem then it would be your Windows has a problem.

Downloads stop

I would suggest lowering the MTU (maximum transfer unit) in the router settings.

the highest you can set an MTU is 1500 (except for AOL, it is a bit lower), this will be the fastest, but also the most unreliable.

Try changing it alot lower, see if it helps (you will experience slower internet at this point but see if the downloads complete), if it does, gradually increase the number until everything doesn't cut off anymore.

Hope this helps

Tony
