I experienced the same problem of being unable to remove the dust cup. Inspection of the dust cup appeared to indicated two tabs on the bottom of the dust cup preventing it from sliding straight out as illustrated in the instructions. However, after much fiddling, I assumed that the dust cup with the tabs was probably a slightly different part than actually intended for that particular model (2996avr) and so decided to force the cup out, reasoning that if the tabs broke in the process, that was necessary for removal of the cup anyway, and therefore not detrimental.

HOWEVER, upon forcing the cup out, the cup broke away from a plate upon which it is designed to sit. The cup had apparently become stuck to the plate after much use without sufficient care and cleaning. The plate is what the tabs are attached to, and so by breaking the cup free of the plate, the tabs were not an issue, and the cup easily slid in and out of the housing, as intended. It was also observed, upon removal of the cup, that there is a very slight lip on the front of the plate to secure the cup in the proper position; this would likely act as an additional hinderance if the cup was also stuck to the plate by old cemented grime.

A couple of corrections/addendums to the above:

    1) incorrectly cited model number above: should have been 2996avs

    2) should have noted that my assumption about having the wrong part was incorrect, but that was not evident until I dislodged the cup from the supporting plate.

    3) with the cup in the housing, the cup and plate can be differentiated by the colour of plastic - cup is clear; plate is gray.

    4) I also assumed people were already also following the instructions of the previous poster.

You guys helped nothing by stating the obvious. It is a crappy design and caused my sister-in-law to buy a different brand. Anybody wanna buy a slightly used Altima crapbox?

SOURCE: I can not get the dirt cup out to empty it.

Just slide the dark gray release tab, located just below the cup, all the way to open position, and then pull the Easy Empty Cup toward you.

MAINTAINING A EUREKA BAGLESS VACUUM

HI, it's Allie from Crucial Vacuum!

Vacuum maintenance is basically a general procedure and requirements for all units, but your Eureka Altima Vacuum can be easily maintained and by doing so properly you will make sure your unit performs at it's maximum capacity and to last longer.

After every use, make sure to empty your unit's dust cup. Allowing for fine dust and debris to rest in your unit's dust cup for a long period may cause your unit to become clogged.

It is recommended to wash and clean your unit's filter screen weekly. To do so, tap your filter screen outdoor to take off any excess dirt and debris and then clean under running water until the water comes out clean. Allow the filter screen to fully dry before inserting it back into the unit.

Foam and cloth filters should also be washed and dried weekly, by following the same steps from cleaning the filter screen. Do not use any soap, dishwasher, dryer or washing machine to do so. Allow your filters to air dry for 24 hours before re-installing them in your Eureka.

Replace your HEPA filter and belts every 6 months. Last, make sure to clear your roller brush of any tangles hair strands or debris monthly and to replace at least every year.

You can purchase direct your replacement belts and HEPA filter from Crucial Vacuum with free shipping and an exclusive 10% coupon for Fixya.com readers, use code: FIXYA10

The belt is probably worn, stretched or broken that is why it is not picking up. Here is a link to the owners manual which has instructions and a link to the belt you need.

Same problem removing the easy empty cup..

The dark gray plastic slide is separate from the Easy Empty Cup. Just slide the release tab all the way to open position, and then pull the Easy Empty Cup straight up. With a little effort, the cup will dislodge from the dark gray plastic platter.

Eureka Altima Bagless Upright Brush is not spinning

You probably just have a broken belt. The belt needs to be changed about every 6 months regardless. I believe yours takes a style EXT U(Extended life upright), or a regular Eureka "U" belt works fine too.

The dust cup has a small gray tray that appears to be part of the cup, but is not. I made the same mistake also and almost broke the stupid thing trying to get it out. Simply push the lock to the left to unlock. Gently lift the dust cup and not the gray tray and the cup will slide out easily.

Cleaning

Don't bother emptying it. It just clogs, brush won't turn, won't even vacuum up a staple on low pile - office-type carpet. The filters clog, the cup clogs, and frankly, your time is worth more than the $50-75 to replace this vacuum.
