Question about Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB External USB 20 Portable Red 500 GB Hard Drive

Open Question

My PC wont recognize my Passport essential ! I was running okay since i bought it until now I was downloading something using flashget onto the drive .. then i wanted to pause it but it was lagging and I couldnt do anything so I thought there was a problem with the download so what I did was the following restarted the PC unplugged the Drive and went to flashget deleted my download thinking it caused the problem then replugged the drive but it wouldnt recognize it after a few minutes windows said installing new drives like when you insert a new USB so I thought it would work but nothing happened so I opened "WD SmartWare" It says My passport and says "No writable WD SmartWare Partition Found" then 0.0 KB Free at the bottom .. Then I saw the Safely remove thing there but when I see the drive name all that is there is "WD My passport 070A USB Device" But there use to be 2 drives not one also I always download things onto my drive so this isnt the problem .. I know if I send it to the shop where I bought it they might replace it and dont give me my data so is there a way to retrieve my data and get it to work ?

SOURCE: My PC is not recognizing my WD Passport 120GB USB external drive.

I had the same issue. Its not a power issue because it shows up in device manager. Heres what I did.

Right-click on my computer and click Manage>Disk Management

Your drive should show up there. Right-click on it. If explore is not grayed out, assign a drive letter to it and you should then be bale to see it in my computer.

In my case explore was grayed out. I had to click on the option to format the drive. After re-formatting the passport explore was available. I then assigned a drive letter to it and I have access again.

I guess somehow using it on multiple computers srcewed up the file-system on it. I was using it between windows and linux.

This fixed my problem.

I had a similar problem with my WD passport 320GB. When I connected it to my laptop it never showed up on My Computer even though the blue light on the hard drive came on.
Here is what I did:  Right click on "My Computer" and click on "Manage" and then "Disk Management",. you should see your WD hard drive listed. then click on "change driver letters and paths"  and change it from the listed to another drive. I changed mine from G to F drive and it worked for me.

SOURCE: no writable WD smartware partition found

One or more of the hints below will probably sort out most USB problems with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

6. For FLASH DRIVES you should ensure that the device is set for "quick removal" using the drive control panel properties or use the USB "Safely Remove Hardware" option. If you dont do this there is a very strong chance that any files you transfer may not be there when you plug into another computer.
7. It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.
You should also do this to cheack the drives connections are not bad inside the enclosure.

8. If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.

9. If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further
10. ensure that you have set removable drives for "quick removal" or that you use the "Safly Remove Hardware" option often shown on the lower toolbar. It is possible that files my not be fully written to external devices before they are removed. This corrupts the file itself and even on occasion the drive.
SPECIAL NOTES
USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.

Hope this gives you the information you need

Cant see my passport external drive on new windows 8 laptop

Try unplugging from usb and plugging it back in. Also, you may need a SAS driver for your computer to recognize the drive. Some drives have internal encryption and require a driver before the computer recognizes them. Check the Mfg website to see whether this drive requires one.

I tried to format my 500gb WD passport essential with exfat using windows 7 for my mediastar pvr . Now neither pvr or windows 7 can see the harddrive

Windows 7 does _NOT_ support 'exfat' drives, as you have found out.
You can "format" the drive, to use 'FAT32' or 'NTFS' file-systems.

Try downloading the device driver from western digital site for your respective OS. And try formatting it with the western digital inbuilt software, which works great.

Western digital passport essential harddrive 250 gig

It assumes that the drive C is the drive you booted from or the "root" drive. You must make it something other than "C". Try putting in a camera card, hooking up an external drive or other device that the computer makes drive "C" THEN hook up your passport. It will be "D" or "G" or something other than "C" and it will work.

Mac My Passport Essential Hard Drive 320GB

This could be a formatting issue, a power issue, or, if you use a hub, it may be a latency issue as well.

Mac's, in general, do not recognize NTFS formatted hard drives. Check the drive properties to see how it is formatted. If this is the case, you can try to reformat the drive as FAT32 (using the MAC) and start over. Keep in mind that you may run into partition size limitations, depending on how current your computers are set up.

Some USB ports limit power to 400-500ma per port, the Passport Essential needs a bit more than 1000ma and won't work at all with these computers. Other USB ports/hubs limit the total power available for all devices combined... this is why, in your case, you can use one drive, but not both.

FYI, higher speed devices also tend to need shorter cables due to latency. (Light & electricity travels about 1 foot, or 30 cm, in a billionth of a second; this limits the size of high speed devices. In layman's terms, latency is the Brontosaurus effect, since the head takes a while to talk to the tail.)

To boost power, Western Digital recommends using a 22" USB 2.0 Power Booster Cable (WDCA029RNN) to combine the power of two USB ports into the one Passport Essential USB port--it is also a bit longer than the original 18 inch cable. For all EXCEPT the black Passport Essential drive, you may also the WD Passport™ Power Supply Adapter (WDPS021 for the US voltage version). See Western Digital knowledge base ID 1296 for more on this issue.

Hope this helps!
