Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

Hi, i have got a bush lcd32tv016hd and i am having problems with it, it switches on so its on standby then when you press the on button the screen lights up then it goes dark and blank screen. i can put it back into standy and switch it on again but it does the same, when i left it on for couple of minutes it started smoking out top right hand corner of case, how ever it didnt smell of anything so not sure if it was just dust burning off as the tell has been stored in green house for 12months. i have stripped the telly down and checked all boards for corrosion and found none i also found no signs of over heating or any parts blistering due to over heating, i got given this as mine has gone beyond repair so im after any help i can on solving this problem. i am ok at soldering and the such but diagnosing faults is a bit beyond me when it comes to lcd tv's i am an expert on the site and have been for years but im a mechanic and mobile phone repair by trade but i also repair consoles such as xbox 360 and ps3 etc etc but im desperate for some help with this telly as i need to get it working so i can use my ps3 again any help appreciated many thanks

A greenhouse is moist and will corrode your solder joints.
You may have to leave the telly off a few days so it will have time to de-humidify before trying to re-start it again. Fortunately you are already familiar with light electronics, so this won't be much of a challenge for you. In your case you most likely have only 2 boards to deal with. The power board and the inverter board. Sometimes these 2 are on the same board. Your main LCD should be unaffected, but your power board is most likely dead. Simply Ebay shop for that and try turning it on again when you replace it. I usually replace both the power board and the inverter board just to be sure the problem is completely resolved. Refer to my step by step how-to here for a quick breakdown of the repair:

Hi thanks for your quick response what happens is the first time i switched it on it came on i didnt have an ariel plugged in or any other input so i just got a blue screen this stayed on for 5 min or so then the screen went black.
i switched it off at mains waited 5 min then tried again i switched it on at the back and the blue light at the bottom in the middle lit up to tell me the telly is on standby then when i press the on button on the remote or side of the telly you can see the screen light up for couple of seconds then it goes black, i left it on for about 10 seconds and some smoke came out of the vents in the top right hand corner how ever this didnt have a small to it it was a white colour smoke and had no smell so couldnt say if it was plastic or not.

when i got the telly the first thing i did was strip it down then take all the boards out and checked for signs of corrosion i cleaned all the circuits on the back and removed any white stains, i dont think the white stains where corrosion as i see this a lot inside the xbox 360 its like where its got hot and left a white trail so i cleaned all this off before trying the telly and when i tried it and got the smoke i switched it off.

then i stripped it down again removed the screen and everything from the casing, i found no signs of anything over heating no resistors bulging or anything, i was a bit confused as where the smoke came from it just left no trace of over heating so wasnt sure if it was just dust, but you usually smell dust burning so its left me confused.

any help i can get i appriciate i dont mind changing parts as long as its going to work, i dont mind a bit of soldering.

the person i got the telly off said the sound started going first but would come back when they banged the telly slightly then when they lost the picture the got a new telly and dumped this one in the green house in its box. they said they never had any signs of smoke coming out of it

is this any help to you. do you have any other ideas what it might be as i cant see anything melted or even blistering slightly as you usually see things blistered, not to sure as im not that well up on lcd's im more into my consoles and pc's have never tried messing with lcd's till now that is

thanks for getting back to me so quickly

White smoke is actually a good sign, especially since there was no smell.
It sounds to me as if your power amps heat sinks were drying themselves off.
I am pretty sure though, that you will have weak and water fatigued solder joints.
Those also emit a fairly odorless white smoke as long as there is no flux on the joint.
A small butane torch should allow these joints to re-attach if you keep the heat low enough and pass over the board carefully. I use this technique a lot on laptop motherboards with great success.
