Sounds like the rubber drive band has not been replaced properly to drive the brush and/or the brush was not properly cleaned. You can find the manual here:

The brushes stop rotating on rugs after a few seconds then button has to be pressed to start rotating again but keeps cutting out

Not sure this is your foolproof solution to the problem, but you might give it a try to see if it solves your problem.
When the beater brush starts to bind up due to debris it retards the action of the cleaner, sometimes to the point of the belt breaking.
Remove the beater brush as if you were going to change the belt. Remove all debris and clean as best you can. Pay attention to the end pieces on each end of the beater brush. They will can clogged to the point to stopping the brush from rotating. Add some WD40 to the clips at the end of the beater brush and work in by twisting the clips while holding the beater brush. Once it seems to be free, reassemble and be sure the belt is on properly, you might want to consider replacing the belt.
If you find this solution to be of help I would appreciate a Thumbs Up. Good luck and be well. Paul

Hi! I have a Dyson ball and I am hearing squeaking sound. The roller doesn't seem to be absorbing most of the dust. what do I do?

Two things you should check:
1- Be sure the belt that drives the beater brush is snug.
2- Good idea to remove the beater brush and clean as best you can. At each end of the brush there are two hard rubber retainers that hold the brush in the housing. Add some WD40 between these retainers and the brush, rotate to be sure the WD40 is worked in so that the retainers move freely around the brush. Sparingly, add a bit of WD40 to any part (wheels) that contact the floor when the unit is in use.
If you find this solution to be of help, I would appreciate a Thumbs Up. Thank you. Paul

Cannot get the brush to rotate when vacuuming

Sounds like the beater brush is frozen and won't turn. Remove the beater brush and clean off all debris, especially at both ends. You will find a square(?) piece at each end of the beater brush that holds it in place. This need to turn freely. Put a little WD40 on these where the center rod of the beater brush enters the small holders and turn by hand until they turn freely. Once this is done, assemble with new belt, making sure the belt is put on properly.

My dyson has lost suction and the brushes do not rotate

Sounds like a broken belt may have been pulled up into the machine. Plan on replacing the belt and cleaning the beater brush. Remove the beater brush and clean off all debris, especially at both ends. You will find a square(?) piece at each end of the beater brush that holds it in place. This need to turn freely. Put a little WD40 on these where the center rod of the beater brush enters the small holders and turn by hand until they turn freely. Hello. i only have one arm and am trying to figure out why my beater bar wont turn on my dyson dc14. the belt smells a little too. thanx, trixie

Sounds like the beater bar is frozen in place. This sometimes happens when the ends of the bar become stuck in the holders. The solution is to remove the beater bar and clean the small holders on each end removing any debris that has built up. Spray with a little WD40 and then manually rotate the beater brush around the holders until it is free, then replace. Be sure the belt is installed properly.

Beater head makes loud noise on 'carpet' mode

Possibly a belt problem, but more than likely a brushroll problem.
The bearings are cheap and nasty, and are prone to siezing.

If you visit http://www.sparesaver.com/help-and-support/dyson-section/dyson-technical-advice-450/ they have alot of info on repairing dyson cleaners AND they sell the parts, cheapest ive seen online.

Hope that helps

The brush rotates on my dyson slim but there is no suction. though there is suction from the hose... has anyone any ideas????

Un-plug the machine first. Turn the unit over and remove the bottom plate. Check for and remove any debris in, around, or behind the beater bar assembly. While you're in there, look at the beater bar ends where the bearings sit. and clean any debris, hair, etc, from those areas as well.

Beater brush does not rotate

i had the same problem, but was able to fix it by opening the brush compartment and cleaning the brushes, then separating the brush head from the body of the vacuum and hitting the reset button at the top of the brush compartment (per dyson online instructions). Works perfectly now.

If the DC18 has a proteted belt then it will have to be replaced by a Dyson engineer or repairer. If the cleaner has a removable sole plate where the beater bar is then remove it and replace the belt - sounds like the belt has snapped and needs to be replaced. if your DC18 is still relatively new it should still be under guarantee.
